Thought I would post my build too.

It has been in service since 2016, but a few components has been upgraded throughout time.
I've named all computers in the home after states from the United States, so this one's called Minnesota.

      It has the following components;
      • Intel Core I7-4790
      • 24 GB of DDR3-ram(will most likely upgrade to 32 GB one day)
      • Nvidia GTX 960
      • 1 TB SSD
      • Noctua fans all around
Also some other quirky stuff like a DVD-reader, memory card reader and a serial port bracket on the back.

I am seeing the pictures posted here in awe! Awesome! Incredible machines for a computer illiterate like me.

I did notice a change in speed after moving on to an SSD... still using a normal laptop though.

Years ago I bought a computer by pieces, thinking I would be able to assemble it. Hyperacusis started to play up and give me troubles and the pieces were sitting in their boxes for a good year haha... then I took them to a shop for someone else to assemble the computer. The fan I had bought did not work after like 3 months and had to upgrade...

In order to decide which computer pieces to buy, just looked up some Spanish website... I think it wasn't great...

How did you all start building computers? How did you know specifically which pieces you should buy?

I got into computer building in my teens.

Finding the right parts can be tricky. For me, it's more about feeling than hard specs comparisons. We have the usual component ranges, from low end to high end. Then there's personal preference, like I prefer Asus motherboards, I think they're great. AMD Ryzen is really catching up and I'm beginning to prefer them over Intel. Kingston makes decent RAM and SSD's. I just weigh everything together, and make sure that the motherboard is compatible with said parts. Noctua makes awesome fans.

It's also good to have a friend or contact that can recommend specific parts of course.

I find it really enjoyable to build computers. It doesn't happen that often, but I've built a few, mostly for family members.

      All the best,

I will snap a pic of my RGB monstrosity when I replace the 3800x with a 5900x and get AIO block installed. Parts ordered, waiting for delivery and time.

Last year I went to the trouble of synchronized red/green in the PC and keyboard/mouse for Christmas, but I may not do that again (animates if clicked).

I seem to have too many mechanical keyboards, too, probably $1000 in value across 4 mechs, despite only having 2 computers in here ;)

Here's how far I came today with my new Linux box:

      Case: Supermicro 743AC-668B
      Motherboard: Supermicro X12SAE
      CPU: Xeon W-1290P, 10 cores, 3.7-5.3 GHz
      CPU heatsink: Noctua NH-C14S
      RAM: 64 (i.e. 2*32) GB 3200MHz ECC
RAID: LSI MegaRaid 9271 /w 1 GB RAM Cache
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics P630 (CPU)
Sound: ALC 888S HD Audio (On board)

      _1022617.jpg

The copper thingy is an aftermarket heatsink for the RAID controller. Everything else is boring stock. I lack the technical expertise to figure out where to attach and connect RGB LEDs so that they look impressive after the cover is closed.

      Some Sunday building...

      THE-rack.png

This is going to be a rack server. I already have a tower running, but for aesthetics and future, it is being rebuilt as a rack. The current server holds a file archive spanning more than a decade, and a software archive, you know, in case World War III breaks out and the Internet DNS servers collapse lol. :p

I really like to build and maintain servers. This one's just going to have an alright Ryzen processor with two HDD's (second one for incremental backup, since I'm personally not too fond of RAID).

I was thinking of getting a new cheap computer as my old one is almost done. It powers off (I need a new charger), the screen is a bit burnt etc... I use it to download stuff, etc. And even if a piece of junk will do, this is maybe roughing it too much...

So I had a look at "offers" of new computers carrying Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen and the cheapest go for around 550 euros. It seems to me we have been stuck in the "Intel i5 world" forever, since this computer that is so old and almost done already carried an Intel i5 chip...

I think 550 euros for a basic i5 laptop (nothing fancy), on "sale"... is kind of expensive.
