I don't really understand why some people think that wearing ear plugs/muffs is weird while they simply wear their sunglasses to protect against the sun! So if you protect your eyes why don't you protect your ears against noise! I'm not saying one should overprotect but there are situations where even people with no hearing/ear problems must protect!

And whenever you come to think if you should protect or not you must definitely protect! Don't ask, protect.

It is just like sunglasses but for ears!

It should not be taboo and one should not be ashamed to wear ear protection when needed. However, it is not "just like sunglasses": it is important to avoid overprotection, for it can aggravate hyperacusis. As I said one should not overprotect e.g. you don't wear sunglasses indoors unless there is a medical condition and you don't wear sunglasses at night. Ear protection is just the same, you don't protect when it is quiet and when the noise is quieter than your LDL or the standard level 85 dB. But when in a loud place one should always protect, E.g. in amusement parks it might be necessary, While working with power tools, concerts, sometimes in cinema, in stadiums, clubbing...
