      Cause of Tinnitus:
Unknown may be blood pressure med or fluid in lef ear
I have been suffering from pulsating tinnitus since 07/21/18, which may have been triggered by blood pressure meds or fluid behind the left eardrum.

The only thing that takes it away so far is regular Claritin allergy medication. If I don't take the Claritin it will come back! :-(

I just want the physician to get to the bottom of this and stop it from occurring or it stops on its own.

      Has anyone been through this?

Are you still taking your blood pressure med? Which one?

One of our managers (Karen) has PT from an antihypertensive (with preexisting tinnitus).

A tympanogram will tell you if you have a middle ear effusion (fluid behind the drum)

If Claritine stops your PT, then I would be looking at histamine intolerance/DAO deficiency (enzyme that breaks down histamine)

From memory, I am pretty sure that histamine can affect bp.

btw, testing for histamine intolerance is difficult. i have done it myself, but the numbers don't always match the symptoms and response to treatment. if you have histamine intolerance, you need to heal your gut, as the enzyme that breaks down histamine is released from the gut lining.

You could look up histamine lowering diets online, and try some DAO. if you feel better (tinnitus improves), then i guess you have your answer.

      Hi, @Sharon True,

I'm sorry to hear you have begun having pulsatile tinnitus. Is it only in one ear, or both ears?

My pulsating started after taking a blood pressure drug -- in my case, it was Lisinopril. It didn't start immediately; I'd say it was within about 1 month of taking the drug. I am off this drug now, but the pulsating continues. However, it has become easier to deal with than it was in the beginning. Along with the pulsating, my existing regular tinnitus got worse, as well.

I agree with Deb in Australia that yours could possibly have something to do with histamine. You are indeed fortunate that the Claritin seems to help, so the fluid on the ear does make sense.

I'll be interested to hear what your doctor has to say, and if he has any suggestions. In the meantime, you might want to check out whooshers.com, for information about PT and other people's experiences, and sometimes cures, from this condition.

Please keep us posted on what you find out from your doctor.

      Best wishes,
      Karen
