Recently Acquired Tinnitus — Stress Related from an Operation :(

Hi

I recently acquired tinnitus about a month ago, stress related from an operation. I was wondering if this will go away or accept that it will be with me for the rest of my life. I really don't want to live like this for the rest of my life.

Any tips to cope would be great, wow how life can turn on us from cruising to ended up like this, it's crazy.

If somebody wants to speak, let me know - be nice to make friends who have the same condition and people to turn to when things get bad, support each other - talking can really help but with people who are going through the same thing,

38 years old, hope to go to sleep and not wake up, really can't do 30 more years of this

@Oscar Ramas, welcome to the forum. I know tinnitus is a difficult thing to deal with, but you're still in the very early stages (as am I) and many people here will tell you that things get much better with time, with it potentially even fading away for some.

You say that your onset is due to stress. I believe mine is as well. I went through close to three months of almost constant anxiety where I wasn't sleeping any more than a couple of hours per night until one day I woke up with incredibly intrusive tinnitus, so I understand how you feel. Just over three months in now and while it's still there, I do feel at times that it's getting milder, so there's hope!

Have you been an extensive user of headphones and or earbuds? Exposed to any loud sounds in the days preceding your onset? You mention in your profile that you woke up from an operation with your tinnitus. Did the doctors have you on any medication before and after your surgery? Any intravenous antibiotics or other meds? A lot of medication is ototoxic and can cause tinnitus.

I don't have a whole lot of coping advice as I'm still so new into this and admit I struggle mentally most days, but it has been getting a little better, so hang in there and focus on the success stories on this site.

Thanks for the support, only your local anaesthesia when you have an operation, if this is due to medication, is there more chances it will go away or does it have the same chance as all the other tinnitus ?

I guess it does not matter, tinnitus is tinnitus and at the end of the day, it down to a miracle that is goes away - hope one day i wake up and it's gone, don't have much hope though....

I can't speak for the likelihood of medication induced tinnitus to fade as I'm not well researched in it, however if you only had a local anesthetic, I don't see that being the cause. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can chime in on that for you.

Don't give up on hope, you're still very new into this and there's a chance it could begin to fade. I would avoid using any headphones and protect around loud noise, just to be safe.
