Steroids: Prednisone / Dexamethasone / Others (Oral and Intratympanic Injections)

Did doctors in the UK say that? Because it seems like different countries have different approaches.
Yes, be cautious of private or insurance-based services that claim otherwise. They are often motivated by payment. Anything beyond a few days is unlikely to be effective.

In the UK, steroids are only recommended when there is measurable and significant hearing loss. It is not recommended for tinnitus of any duration.

Delivery of steroids intratympanically in a nanoparticle format was compared with a standard steroid solution. This study focused on sudden sensorineural hearing loss, not tinnitus. In 42 percent of cases, no hearing was restored. The nanoparticle solution performed better than the standard solution.

This is not the full article, so it does not mention the timeframe between hearing loss and treatment. In general, treatment more than three days after the onset of hearing loss is considered futile.

It does not matter. The intravenous Methylprednisolone ruined my life. It gave me tinnitus, dysacusis, and visual snow syndrome.

Same for me. I wish I had not panicked and taken these medications after reading this group. They ruined my life, and I would have been a lot better off without them.

Has anyone reduced their tinnitus by taking Prednisone? It seems that for most of the people I have seen on here, it either did nothing or only helped with their hearing, but not with the tinnitus. I have taken it twice for sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and my hearing did come back, fortunately. Any additional tinnitus that followed the hearing loss also went away. The tinnitus that I already had from previous noise exposure months earlier returned to its default level afterward.

I also went to the ENT because I have had tinnitus in my right ear for roughly three to four weeks. I would consider this tinnitus mild to moderate, since I can only hear it in quiet rooms. I think I got it from attending a series of concerts, but I am not entirely sure, as it seemed to creep up on me gradually.

I do not appear to have any hearing loss. However, they only tested up to 8 kHz, so I cannot be certain about the higher frequencies or possible hidden hearing loss.

The doctor prescribed me Prednisolone for 10 days. For the first three days, I am supposed to take 100 mg, and then taper off gradually. After doing some reading, I am concerned. It seems that the likelihood of improvement after three to four weeks is quite low. Prednisolone also has many potential side effects, and 100 mg seems like a high dose. I am now quite afraid to take it. I also read that psychosis is a possible side effect, and since I am not in the best mental state right now, I feel hesitant.

I also told the doctor that I have difficulty "popping" my right ear, and everything on that side feels a little clogged, including my nose. He simply said that the cortisone would take care of that as well.

Don't take it. It worsened me.

May I ask how it worsened your situation? Did your tinnitus get louder?
I have taken it many times. Sometimes I need a course when my asthma gets out of control. The usual dosage is 40 mg, then 20 mg, then 10 mg over about 9 days.

I have also taken it many times for acoustic trauma, although I am now done resorting to that unless I experience actual hearing loss. In those cases, I would start at 60 mg and taper down gradually.

I have not had any serious issues with it. It does cause restlessness, anxiety, and other uncomfortable side effects at higher doses, but it definitely makes the tinnitus feel less intense while I am on it.
