Hi Everybody, I'm new to the forum.

Sorry but English is not my mother tongue.

I have had tinnitus for 2 years and I was fully habituated.

But last month a strange sound appeared out of the blue. At first a strange beeping like a telephone and later a sound like ambulance siren.

At first these sounds occurred principally when I play white noise, like bathroom heater or in the traffic but now the situation is worse and I always hear these sounds.

      Anyone experienced this problem?

Is this a case of strange distortion or hyperacusis?

It doesn't sound like hyperacusis to me. It sounds like you started having some reactive tinnitus but which then started sticking around instead of going away.

Would you be able to try a course of prednisone?

I think a month is still a very short time to be too worried about it. It could be that these new sounds go away in the near future.

Are you monitoring your tinnitus a lot? You should stop doing that, there are theories that it gets the sounds stuck into the brain.

Thanks for the reply, I don't know about prednisone. In a few days I will see a neurologist and ask him for information about my case.

If anyone has had a similar story, you can also contact me in private message.

      Thanks.

There are scattered threads on this if you search for hearing distortion / dysacusis. I get it as well when I am listening to fans, air conditioning, heaters, etc... basically most white noise sounds distorted.

I have had it for about 4 weeks. It sounds like it went away for some people and not for others.

Thanks for the reply. Do you still have it? Mine went away for about 1 month and now returned last week...

@ColdHands, yes! I’ve had this for about 2 months now after a noise trauma! It’s very distressing so I understand how you feel! I find when I boil the kettle etc it sets it off. My ear has become full too which I suspect is hearing loss.

I’ve found this setback extremely distressing and truly hope this goes away for us both! x
