Noise trauma
Hey everyone,

I recently started off with tinnitus due to a shooting range incident which led to my left ear ringing, eventually it progressed to my right ear and started bothering me with pain to sounds in both ears, however after about 1-2 weeks the pain from my ears went away but instead I started experiencing numbness all over my body, my whole back, neck, legs, and even my face to the point where I cannot feel normal sensations.

I would also like to add that sound causes pressure on random parts of my face and tightness, what my question basically is whether all the numbness etc. can result from an acoustic trauma or could this be something else?

I have done a brain MRI and CT scan of the neck with nothing wrong in them.

See an otologist or oto-neurologist.

These are medical mysteries and the consequences of cochlear nerve damage and neuro reorganization that occurs afterward hearing damage are not well understood. A common theme is for people on these forums to visit ENT's and audiologist that are virtually useless outside of out ruling a 8th nerve tumor when they should atleast see someone who may have a clue.

Let us know if if the noise induced pain stays away or comes back.

sound causes pressure on random parts of my face and tightness,
I had this in direct result of an acoustic trauma.

Common themes of nerve damage include burning, aching, itching, shooting, swelling, numbness, the trigeminal nerve is definitely a player in this condition but it makes no sense whatsoever how the sensation went through out your body. CNS disorder??? We don't know.

Hi Ray, were you wearing ear protection?? I used to go shooting at the range....ahhh so much fun those days.

I agree with @Contrast , you should go see a neurologist and skip the ENT for now.
I did experience the numbness on my whole head and that was a bit scary. Thankfully it went away after a couple of weeks.

Are you feeling anxious? Because anxiety can trigger all kinds of symptoms..
Feel better soon Ray,

Once

Hi Once,

I wouldn't say I'm anxious to the point where it would trigger all this but it's very concerning to me because I've been experiencing neck stiffness as well as back stiffness and numbness pretty much in both of those places as well and yes i was wearing protection but I'm guessing my ears were not resilient sadly. I have an appointment with my Neurologist on Friday so hopefully I can get an idea of what's going on. I haven't been feeling like myself at all aside from the ear issues , waking up with nerve pain and stiff joints every morning which is getting me worried since I'm 22 years old and this is only happening after the onset of my tinnitus and hyperacusis.

I know a family member who recently was admitted to ER due to sudden numbness, tingling sensations and shortness of breath. She thought she was having a stroke of heart attack. Done all kind of tests and nothing. The doctors now say she is having nerve attacks from too much stress and anxiety. So it is possible. But I agree with others you need more consultation and thorough check to rule out major health problems.

Hey @Ray552
The onset of tinnitus is like a domino effect....that never ends. sigh
I've had so many different symptoms that I never had before, but thankfully all have subsided and I am just left with tinnitus... Grrrr

Well it is good that you are going to see the Neurologist. Maybe he has answers to your questions.
You are young Ray, you'll get better. Give it sometime. Get some rest and don't stress too much ok.

Feel better soon,

Once

it's scary how ENT's are getting patients that they have no idea to treat.

Pain from noise is a complex otological / neurological problem and it deserves the right doctor, it's so good we are redirecting traffic. sufferers deserve better.

@Ray552 Hopefully it's nothing major. If it's some weird nerve issue that is connected to the acoustic trauma, there's virtually no chance of doctors being able to diagnose it (willingly or otherwise). If it is a not text book case, they typically chalk it up to stress and/or anxiety. I wasted money trying to figure out my nervous system problems. But still, it's important to check.

I don't know if neurologist will help, this is just a social experiment to see if anyone will show more compassion and intellect then audiology status quo.
