Cause of Tinnitus
Earwax
I've had tinnitus for four months today.

It started really loud (hear it over conversations), but I got earwax removed and it became much quieter.

I sometimes can easily hear it in a quiet room.

It gets randomly loud, but it can also become nearly inaudible, even when I cover my ears with pillows.

Also I can control it with my mind (get rid of tones, some become pulsatile, replaced with buzz, etc).

Is it getting randomly quieter a good sign?

Hi @pianoforte. First let me say that I am not s doctor, so I have no actual training of authority from which to answer your question.

But, it is my belief that if you it does get quieter, and you ave able to basically ignore it at times; that is a good sign.

@Bill Bauer wrote the following post discussing studies that show a fairly high recovery rate from tinnitus ( https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/spontaneous-recovery-stats-over-70-recover-3-studies.21441/ ). This study indicates that many cases of tinnitus just go away after a period of time.

Also, if you have control over it, have you tried using that control to quiet it or even stop it? You could possibly train your mind to keep it in check subconsciously, to where it happens automatically without any effort.

Thanks. Do you know if it for sure will get better? Any professional opinions I could get?

I cannot say with any certainty either way. The post I mentioned in my previous reply would lead one to believe that there is a good chance it will get better, but it would be dishonest of me to make any claim with any degree of certainty.

I would seek the advice of medical professionals. a doctor, a neurologist, possibly and ENT.

I wish I could tell you that you will be cured. I believe that it will get better for you, either the symptoms will dissipate or you will learn to habituate, but I can claim neither with any degree of certainty. I am sorry.

I am not a doctor, but I would think this a really good sign. I would continue to protect your ears from loud noises, though. I have had T for 4 months and have not had any changes…….you are showing progress!
