Hi everyone I've joined this forum today as I'm really ill and my Tinnitus is worse than ever.I only get the ringing/buzzing in my left ear and have had this since 2012 and have started to be able to live with this but last night it was that horrendous i had to sleep with my tv on!! Is it always going to be this bad now or is it just because I'm ill??? It would be nice to be able to finally speak to others that are suffering as none of my family or friends have Tinnitus.:(:(:(

      Hi Amy,
I would say if you are ill then there's a good chance that is the reason for the spike in intensity, allot of T sufferers get a spike while ill with a cold or whatever.

I would say that this is just temporary while you are ill.

Same here. It's very common for tinnitus to be temporarily worse in people who are ill. Happens to me every time I get a cold for sure.

How long have you all had Tinnitus for? Does it get worse as the years go on??

It's my understanding that most people get worse tinnitus when they are ill. Especially during a cold. My tinnitus is always louder than the tv.

Hi, welcome @Amy Page. I will echo what others here have said: tinnitus often is worse when you are sick. You might want to try running a fan in your room at night, or use some other kind of white noise to get you through the night until things clear up. They have great noise apps available for a small fee for smart phones, or there is a masking track download here at TT for free. You also might use a natural sleep supplement, like Sleepy Time tea or melatonin.

As for what happens in the long run: Depends on the person. Some people's tinnitus gets worse, or they lose hearing. But many people have no change. Many people, in fact, get better -- they learn to ignore their tinnitus so that they not longer even notice it. So don't worry that what you are experiencing now will be forever, and concentrate on getting better.

I hope it is just because I'm ill as I've really started to learn to live with it this last year or so I'd be gutted if it stays this bad!

Agree when sick it spikes. Also agree about using a fan at night. Have used one for years and in my case it really helps me to relax. White noise also is good.

Welcome Amy. I agree with others that your spike is because of your illness and that it will subside eventually. T is quite unpredictable. Setbacks are quite common along the way towards ultimate habituation. It can spike for many reasons and can be quite personal too. In general, T can spike after illness, increased stress level, not enough sleep, loud sound exposure, taking some meds, or some diet ingredients such as alcohol or caffeine etc. etc. I used to tip-toe around my T gingerly to avoid provoking it. Bad move. I end up having too much anxiety about my T and I couldn't enjoy my life when I knew T had me so intimidated. So I said the heck with it. I would live my life the way I like to enjoy it and if it spikes so be it. I would bring up mental imagery as if I am like one of the millions of people who have to work in loud jobs, like train operator, pilots and flight attendants, miners and drill workers etc. They gladly take their jobs for life for wages exposing to loud noises day in and day out. So why should I suffer so much with this sound in my ears? I then accept the T ringing just so I have my life back. Not a perfect analogy of course. But a few years back I could ill afford a perfect analogy. It was either acceptance or hellish suffering and misery for life. I choose acceptance and the rest is history, and I wrote my success story like many others who have chosen to accept T and move on.

In the real world it seemed no one had tinnitus
when i first got it. It was a lot of comfort speaking to people on here, because it made me realize, although i can't see them, i'm not going through this on my own.
