I only wear plugs when I go into the gym. Noise levels is around 80 decibels.

At what noise level should ear plugs be worn?

It depends on your current level of damage/sensitivity. Most of the time spikes subside, so just pay attention to what triggers your spikes and then protect from similar sounds. It's not just about sound amplitude, but also frequency, so pay attention to those things together.

I don't have senstivity as yet but tinnitus is now pretty loud after a Spike a month back and hasn't subsided at all. Don't think it will

Its mainly trance music in the gym

The biggest reason behind my T is that I tried to drown out the awful house music my gym plays with my own.

Measured it today - they play between 70 and 80db.

Now I wear Peltor earmuffs instead. And so should you.

Overprotecting seems to be a hot button issue on this forum. I personally think wearing them when you're outside the house is fine, at least for the first while after getting T or a spike.

The rule of thumb: when you need to raise your voice so that the person next to you can hear you.
I mainly use them when I am in the plane, in the subway, in cities with very busy traffic/frequent sirens or when I need to do something loud (e.g. using a power tool)..
