- Cause of Tinnitus
- Wish I knew. Several theories. No solutions yet.
Male, 47. Have had subjective tinnitus in my right ear in the 4000 mhz range since October of 2014. I drank heavily in December of 2014 because I couldn't stand it ( I wasn't a light drinker before, more on that later.) I have seen: My GP, a Naturopath, a Herbalist, an acupuncturist, an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist - no success.
From what I have endlessly Googled, Tinnitus can come from just about anything or a combination of things. Factually, immediately preceding the tinnitus I do know I had a bad infection in nose, ears, throat and eyes in Oct. 2014 when I travelled for work up north and was stuffed in a $*$%# hotel that 'previously had a mold problem' which I discovered after some investigation. To deal with it, the maid staff were told to use this 'anti-mold' solution in the carpet. And they used a ton of it. The carpet was damp.
I don't know if the infection came from the mold or the anti-mold liquid but I think the latter as it hung quite heavily in the air (burned throat and eyes) I lasted 3 days in that room before I transferred to another hotel. By then my nose was dripping, eyes burning, throat very sore. While I am not sure if my ears were infected because they didn't hurt at the time, it is impossible that they weren't because ear, nose, throat are all closely connected.
My guess is the tinnitus came from the above. To date it has not gone away despite seeing several healthcare practitioners as mentioned above.
If it did not come from the above, my only other guess is excessive alcohol ( was drinking bourbon there because that is what a co-worker drank, I usually drink red wine ) I also renewed the bad habit of drinking red bull 2-4 times a day.
I went through a few rounds with a E/N/T specialist who measured the tinnitus in the 4000 mz range, (I You-Tubed 4000 mz at work for a few people, they last 1/4 of a second before screaming at me to turn it off because it is such a high range )
A hearing test showed that I had hearing loss in the 4000 mz range and it was explained to me that the brain compensates for this loss of sensation by creating it's own frequency in the same range. 'See me in a year for a follow up.' the specialist said and sent me on my merry way. Had I not had this crazy infection at the same time I would believe him - also - in my left ear, I have periodic tinnitus - it lasts 5-10 seconds and only happens maybe once a month, and usually when I'm going downstairs or in an elevator i.e.: pressure changes. The sound grows and peaks for a few seconds, then fades away. How could that be a hallucination and not real?
I drank heavily in the month after I got it because I have had a lifelong sleeping problem which obviously the tinnitus made worse. Drinking dulled the noise and if you drink enough, you could pass out with a helicopter taking off beside you. But if you Google 'alcohol acetaldehyde candida' you will see that too much alcohol creates an overload of the toxin acetaldehyde which can create a candida yeast overload WHICH can cause tinnitus. (this I just found in the last few days ) That said, I quit drinking for seven months in 2015 - not one drop - and the tinnitus never wavered. But you will read that simple sugars can cause candida as well. While I quit drinking I was consuming almost 4 cans of red bull a day ( not smart, I know- have stopped ). I am revisiting my naturopath this week to discuss the acetaldehyde / candida theory and perhaps get tested for their levels to see if they are an issue.
All I can say is that because there are so many causes of tinnitus, only we, the sufferers, can be the best to continuously try to get to the bottom of the issue. The doctors I saw seemed to just routinely dismiss me with a few generalizations and didn't really engage my questions because I guess you could talk about it for days. My herbalist said 'butcher's broom'; is known to help ( it didn't). Acupuncturist said it is a build up of stress (that I believe, working on it).
Just recently after another month of heavy drinking, I have quit again and am going on a very healthy detox kick. I jog 6-7 miles a day and am eating only vegan and drinking a case of mixed cold pressed organic juices from a vegan restaurant daily ( a programmed cleanse) - I'll let you know how it goes. My own theory is to now just get the liver functioning at its highest levels and see if it helps.
Best of luck to all.
