I will make sure to wear Peltor muffs during the takeoff (and wear Bose at the cruising altitude).

There is a whole thread I started a while ago on disabling airbags
Some good discussion went there perhaps you may want to read

Why would I make up such a story ? (read my story in my profile, the balloon comes after a long history of T/H).

A balloon can be more than 140dB, not so different from an airbag.

      It's 45 Db at 160 hz

For higher HZ it goes down quick to 20db or less

In any case it does not work well for sudden impact noises

This thread is making me consider deleting my TT account. Please don't disable your airbags, and for those reading who are considering showing someone how to disable their airbags: take a minute, and imagine the consequences.

It's heresy, isn't it! Unthinkable and yet quite logical for those of us who devote their entire lives to avoiding loud noise.

Perhaps we could have a thread discussing vehicle brands that have made purposeful efforts to lower the volume of their airbag detonations. Older vehicles have been responsible for causing hearing loss and tinnitus in individuals. Newer models of vehicles made by Mercedes Benz, for example, apparently include active systems that limit hearing damage from airbags. A decibel chart for each auto brand would be interesting.

I get it, I've been there (I am there right now actually) but you have to pause and think rationally. A spike or exacerbation of T makes you think terrible things - you lose your logic. You cannot let it run all aspects of your life, otherwise you will never get better!

I try to avoid loud noises as much as I can ..I don't go to concerns ..receptions or any live music event .
Some things you just can't avoid like accidents ! Some one screams next to you ..dog barks next to you ..waiter drops dishs next to your table ..so much crap we just can't avoid .
I was going to work and I accidentally rolled down my back seat car window and it won't go up ! Luckily I had ear plus but all the sudden I am in crappy mood and feel down . It really sucks to be in this situation .
Hopefully some cure will come along .

Absolutely right, same goes for sonic booms, gas leaks/explosions, someone driving next to you and firing a gun in the air (lol)...the trick is to not let the fear of things that will most likely never happen, lead to irrational fear of everyday noises and possibilities. Sh*t happens!

Pain/Suffering tends to throw rationality out the window unfortunately. This is not the only thread that exemplifies this.

Yes I agree ..just try our very best to avoid such things and if accidents happens after trying 100% there is nothing we can do .

It is usually possible to switch off the passenger airbag if you are driving alone. That is what I do, to at least avoid an unnecessary air bag going off.
Ordinary balloons popping were measured at up to 157 db, which is almost equivalent to an air bag.
I am also wary of loud noises going off such as air bags , (now balloons) and fireworks. The thing is, I used to pop balloons and go to fireworks displays without concern and without any immediate obvious affect on my ears. Perhaps it all adds to the cumulative damage and now I am paying for it.

The passenger airbag is usually the least loud - driver airbag and side bags are very loud

There is usually a switch. I have two cars that both have a switch to turn off the passenger airbag. It is so that you can have a baby or child in a car seat at the front.

Too bad there are no switches for driver's airbag...

Not too sure about that, as the passenger airbag is usually larger and has further to go in order to reach the passenger compared to the driver airbag which comes from the steering unit. Anyway, one less airbag going off has to be an improvement.
