      Hi Guys,

I might be needing a course of antibiotics and have been reading quite a bit about potential increases in tinnitus.

The course would be 1x 1000mg of Azithromycin, 200 mg per day for 7 days for Doxycycline or 3x 500 mg per day for 7 days in case of Amoxicillin.

      1. Has anyone had any experiences at similar doses with these drugs?
      2. Which one would have the least risk of increasing tinnitus?

Would be very grateful for an answer on this!

      Best,

      Chris

Yes. That is a common dosage for these antibiotics.
Amoxicillin and Augmentin is the safest, followed by Doxycycline. But it depends what the treatment is for as they are often both used for different infections and not always interchangeable. These are not ototoxic, but like all antibiotics can have side effects which may include a temporary spike in your tinnitus.

Azithromycin most likely won’t cause problems, but it has more of a potential chance if you’re concerned.

      Hi Paulie,

Thanks for answering, I think I'd actually prefer the Azithromycin as it is a one time dose of 1000mg, do you think this dosage only once should be safe?

Pharmaceuticals are about “potency” of the drug, not its dosage in Mg. In other words, you can’t compare 1000mg of one drug to 100mg of another if they are different chemical compounds; one is not more or worse to the body despite the dosage being larger or smaller.

1 dosage of Azithromycin is most often prescribed for your suspected infection as patients compliance will be easier to manage.

Ultimately you need to make the decision with your doctor. You know the facts now.

For me this is the safest antibiotic to take. I have never had a problem with this medication regarding tinnitus. I think there was another thread about this and several people stated the same answer.

Hope all goes okay for you.
