Antidepressent Recommendation Which Can Reduce/Stop Tinnitus?

Hi folks,

I know some people on here have had good results with Anti Depressents which have reduced/virtually stopped the Tinnitus they have had.

What recommendations do you have based on your experience?

I am not aware of any antidepressants that will stop tinnitus but this is not to say there isn't any. An antidepressant usually helps a person not to become too down with their tinnitus and acts as a safety net. The more down a person becomes the more intrusive the tinnitus will appear to be. The less stressed a person is the less intrusive the tinnitus will be. Tinnitus can make stress worse and stress can make tinnitus worse. It can become a vicious circle. For this reason it is important that a person stress levels do not become too much with tinnitus.

Thanks Michael. I have seen some posts on here where people mention that the AD they took almost completely reduce the Tinnitus. Perhaps they mean the perception of it.

It is quite possible that antidepressant will help anxiety and stress and this can result in the tinnitus being lowered in intensity. It is important that stress levels are managed as I've mentioned above, because the more stressed a person becomes the tinnitus will usually become louder. Medication such as clonazepam, which I take will reduce the tinnitus to complete silence for some people. It does this for me. This medication is strong and shouldn't be used to often as it's addictive. It is sometimes prescribed for people with severe tinnitus.

No. I take clonazepam about twice a month now for no more than 2 days. ....Sometimes when my tinnitus is severe I won't reach for the clonazepam and wait to see if it'll calm down on it's own. I am in a much better place than I was from 2008 to 2012. It took me 4 years to habituate for the 2nd time.

I used Xanax before sleep and then the next morning T was rly now, almost silence

 

I would be careful with Wellbutrin/bupropion (I'm 95% sure my tinnitus was caused by Wellbutrin/bupropion), and generally I'd be careful with SSRIs.
