Cause of Tinnitus
cleaning out wax
Hello
First Time posting.

I always seem to be fiddling with ear wax either putting my fingers in my ears to clean the wax (daily) or using a match to take out the wax. I am just a really bad fidget and know something I should not be doing but cannot seem to stop. Its one really bad habit I have.

Around 10 days ago, I was cleaning the wax with a match in my left ear. I never insert the match deep perhaps 1cm maximum and always do it softly

On this occasion, I went in hard at the top of the ear carnal (around 1cm in) and suddenly noticed a slight buzz straight away like I had injured my ear. Difficult to describe but like a small frequency wave.

Stopped and didn't think much of it. Carried out with my usual activities of listening to headphones while running for around 45 minutes or listening music in my gym (at around 60 decibels) for 40 minutes. I have noticed the tinnitus has got louder few days after like a higher frequency. Its not affecting my sleep but just bit annoying when I am working at home and just concerned I may make it worse as just cannot make changes in my lifestyle than means reducing the time I listen to music and maybe reducing the volume (it isn't that loud at the moment)

I went to see my doctor and see said the inner left ear is slightly red (compared to my right ear) and maybe an slight infection. Gave me eardrops (cannot remember the name) but never used them as I read somewhere they may cause more harm than good. Not sure doctor really understood Tinnitus

Last year I did go clubbing quite a lot and noticed in or two clubs the music was actually hurting my ears as it was so loud. Not sure if is relevant since the damage seem to be self induced though my have contributed perhaps making my ears sensitive.

I know its only been 10 day so I guess I may need to wait and patience. I thought it maybe due to earwax being pushed near my eardrum but the fact I went in hard at the top of the carnal and suddenly the buzzing happened probably isn't the case of ear wax being the problem

Would love to hear your views and advice - Thanks

Leaving your infection untreated can be very dangerous and leave permanent damage into your ears. This is the reason why your doctor gave you drops - they probably contain an antibiotic. Some drops (such as Ciprodex) are used routinely on people (even kids) who have perforated ear drums. It's the "go to" drops after tympanostomy tubes are inserted. Lots of studies are available (publicly) WRT their safety.

Also stop putting things in your ears. If you "cannot seem to stop", talk to a psy doc who can help you with compulsive behavior.

Finally, keep your ears away from loud sounds - that includes clubbing, etc.

Good luck.

Actually what was prescribed was Otomize ear spray and have read a lot on the web thats its made the Tinnitus worse. My infection is only slight in the carnal It doesn't feel like an infection I think it was due to the digging which just made the ear carnal slightly inflamed and the doctor thought it was an slight ear infection causing T.

Yes, I am going to avoid clubbing and headphones for a while and then go out once a month. This is a warning sign to look after one ears. I probably to need to see a psy doctor on my compulsive behaviours as such a fidget.

Isn't Tinnitus caused by problems nearer the drum than just digging with match just 1cm in. I just hope its only temporary and not permanent

I have had tinnitus for 40 years but it was moderate and I cld ignore it. At 80 I had a major cancer op which caused screaming tinnitus. Doctor were useless but a friend recommended Prochlorperazine. This is miraculous. It works every time for me and it is available on prescription. I get it at Costco, which is the cheapest place for all drugs and they are available to everyone WITHOUT a card. It is well worth trying.

In the USA this drug is sold as Compazine and does require a prescription.
