Hi guys,

Does this in flight noise seem loud to anyone else. I got on the flight (to Miami) yesterday, which is 9 hours long.

Got on the flight, heard this cabin noise and went into a 9 hour panic attack, which hasn't properly ended. Worries of permanently worsening already bad tinnitus.

I do wear earplugs a lot, so it is possible that I have lowered my sensitivity threshold. My iPhone db app had the cabin cruising noise at 87-90 (we were by the wing).

Does this noise here seem particularly loud and permanently damaging to you guys!

Thanks for the help and advice and support,

My DB meter reads kinda high and i usually sit in the first 10 rows. I have to wear ear plugs or else my demon level ringing become even louder and the pain that generates in the ears are just horrible. My ear plugs seem to work well.....That's the only thing i hate about, flying...it's the noise inside...

I do wear earplugs a lot,

We have already discussed this in PM @Elfin. My comments are to anyone that wears earplugs a lot, especially suppressing normal everyday sounds. Anyone with sensitivity to the auditory system, typically hyperacusis that some call reactive tinnitus. I advise not to wear earplugs and other hearing protection too often. This can result in making the auditory system even more sensitive to sound, by Lowering its loudness threshold.

Hi Fishbone, thanks for the reply, brother.

Have you experienced any spiking from flying even through the use of earplugs? Was this temporary?

Out of interest, what sort of readings does your official metre give when flying? The iPhone app surely won't be as reliable.

I was sitting by the wing in row 18 yesterday - any nearer and the ticket was over $2000!!

The DB reading was high enough to seriously bother the ears. With ear plugs, i felt ok. Only issue that i had, last time was that i got a cold on vacation and then when i flew back the ear plugs/cabin pressure clogged up and blocked my ears badly.

I already have bad hearing, but.....i could not hear at all. I smiled and didn't panic...i could hear nothing. It was tough and scary when both ears shut down.

it took some meds and a week or 2 to get my hearing back fully..

That's the issue here. I had some earplugs in, but still seemed so loud. Even tried to put some headphones the builders wear over the ears for added protection, but could still hear the engine noise so loudly. It was also reacting with the T so I could hear all kinds of noises.

Very distressing.

Any regular flyers with advice on what to wear and how to cope! Got the return flight and I am dreading it even thinking about it!

Do you have Bose noise canceling headphones? I recently flew and felt the NC headphones cut the sound at least in half. At one point on the flight I tried out my earmuffs for comparison and it really seemed like the Bose did a much better job of muting the low, loud engine noise.

There are other members on TT who fly frequently; I bought my Bose on their recommendations.

Hi Tinker Bell,

Many thanks for the reply. I shall certainly look into these based on your recommendation! Need something for the return flight!

Hi guys,

Anyone viewed the videos. Thoughts on the noise levels and safety over a 9 hour flight?!

Any objective view would be very much appreciated!

I think it is likely okay given that flight attendants are regularly exposed to that noise level and there does not seem to be an overwhelming number with hearing loss from their occupation.

That said, I think the volume is fine for someone with normal hearing/ears. I think the volume is fine for someone like us wearing ear protection.
