Interestingly, lastnight I woke up in the middle of the night to no hum sound at all. I had tonal T, but it was such a rarity to not have this other thing going on. I got up as I couldn't sleep and noticed that when I turned my head left/right/up/down the hum would come back, but then would disappear looking straight ahead. Today the hum is back to it's usual thing, but very low.

Unfortunately I'm going to through a week long reactive spike that I think (hope) is due to going through a phase of very broken sleep every night. It starts off low in the mornings and then ramps up during the day. So tired of these never ending changes...

      @Greg Sacramento

My appoint with ear specialists that deal with a host of neurological and mechanical issues when it comes to the ear is on Monday, but wanted to update on what occurred recently.

My vibration temporary stopped Wednesday night and all of Thursday due to a cold. I had slight sore throat that shifted more into chest coughing of phlegm, stuffy nose and pressure in my ears. It started Tuesday slightly, but peaked around 11pm Wednesday night and all through Thursday. The vibration was gone and ear felt normal (outside the normal pressure feeling of being sick). It then came back Friday after getting up around 1pm.

What I don't understand is why the vibration completely vanished with the Cold or perhaps more specifically, the full ears and pressure. I had the first night that I can remember of going to bed and waking up with no vibrating hum.

Today it's been quite bad. Worse than normal, as it's not calming down at all to a 5/10 like usual. It's really aggravated and bad. Perhaps as a result of the 24h of coughing up phlegm and blowing my nose I've injured what ever this is. I also awoke today to my right neck being a bit sore like i slept wrong, some slight sharp pain in the ear and sight soreness of the lower jaw below the earlobe. Though I don't know if there's any relevancy there to it returning.

Having 24h break was a godsend and I'm quite devastated today. I'd rather being sick all the time then have this vibration and the odd feeling in general of the ear when it's in this vibration mode.

@Shasta Thanks for your update. I had read your postings on your vibrations completely vanishing due to a cold. There are several notations in medical journals and specific study on vibration hums that mention a hum may temporary disappear if the patient goes into heart failure or develops a respiratory illness. What happens is venous flow slows. The physiology related to this is about anything that causes a vibration hum. A venous hum is a benign phenomenon. The cardiac output flows to the brain via the internal carotid and vertebral arteries. This drains via the internal jugular veins. The flow of blood can cause the vein walls to vibrate creating a humming noise which can be heard by the subject. Typically, a peculiar humming sound is heard in the upper chest near the clavicle or thyroid. A venous hum is also common in patients with severe uremia with a low hematocrit.

The ways of development and health issues are limited in cause. So I don't have an update on previous mentions and in fact since reading about your hum disappearing with systematic illness, your cause is under 10 reasons. I also don't think that your vibration will be lasting if you are able to control hypertension, emotional stressful angry upsetting excitement. With a venous hum and rising blood pressure MEM or fluttering ear muscles can happen and you know a lot about that. A question that I have is - has your thyroid ever been checked - at less by blood work. I ready would get a color venous ultrasound on neck. Also is your C1 area OK and are your SCM muscles ever sore.

Some common associations and development for a hum include:
      1. hyperextension of neck and holding it there with twisting of neck for several minutes. Often seen in a dental chair.
      2. Hyperextension of neck with twisting neck quickly while having an upsetting movement.

Thanks for the reply. I looked up venous flow and the sound recorded of it, and it's not what I experience as the main symptom. I do experience it though, a blood rushing sensation more often since this vibration issue came back, but it's not the vibration itself I'm struggling with. Or is what you're saying that the venous hum symptom itself a causation for then getting MEM/Fluttering sensation/sound?

Just to reiterate, sorry for being possibly redundant. Description is:

Sound and feeling, of something vibrating. It's low frequency like 49-59hz on a tone generator. It pulsates in nature, a ebb and flow type. It can go vroom, .2 second pause, vroom, or a vroom, vroom, vroom secession or when it gets really bad, such as wearing an earplug or turning car off after a drive, becomes more continuous and more intense vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom, until calming down to the former examples I listed.

I also want to note when it's quiet, and if I create a type of low booming noise, like lightly hitting wall with my palm, or even typing my cheekbone, it creates a type of low rustle sound. Like, have you ever brushed your ear and heard something contract and create a low raspy noise for a split second? It's like the low freq. I create resonates and triggers it. Seems to be related to general theme of my problem perhaps as only noticed it with this issue.

Slight, sharp type of pain in the ear is present at times as well. For example, today when it came back I noticed this slight sharp soreness/pain was slightly black.

Only time I seem to be able to stop it is making a low humming noise and/or talking, which it will start up right after I stop.

      Your Questions:

      1) Thyroid - My blood test had a TSH test done, which was 1.87. Reference range was 0.40 -4.50 mIU/L.
      2) Not aware of any C1 issues of neck. I sit a lot but I don't suffer neck pain or any issues as far as I'm aware.
      3) Muscles you refer to I have not had soreness there before. I have got cramps in muscles right below the chin where there's soft muscle. I've looked down and yawned or random trigger has done it before. Usually rare.

June, 2015 Information I want to update you with:

This is part of a post I found from myself from 2015. I describe in detail the exact same thing I have now, it was just less frequent then with more off and on for months. Here's what I wrote:

"Two days later, I woke up in the middle of the night to this pulsing "hmm....pause....hmm...pause...hmm" sound, that was inside my right ear. Almost felt external. A pulsing vibration of sorts. Wasn't attached to my heart beating rhythm The next morning it was there, going off on all triggered by sound at times, others I don't know. The first week and half followed a full/pressure feeling and deep pain in the ear. I also noticed low freq. bothered my right ear. The fridge hum seemed louder in my right ear, the subwoofer seemed louder in my right ear ect.. The pain/full symptoms wen't away after 1 and half weeks and next 2-3 weeks had intermediate pop ups of just the the pulsing "hmm". The episodes started to become less frequent and going week with out at times. Since May 25th I haven't felt it until last night where I head a killer headache and it was very brief and low. In addition, I've noticed clicking like sounds off and on since the original April 12th incident in the right ear, though not frequent."

Does this give any indication on this illness? Even though now it's more often, being as it's an almost 24/7 thing in varying intensity, how exactly did I have this and it go dormant before, only to creep back now. Does that indicate anything?

Mine can go away at times although not often enough. Sometimes for some days. I just suddenly realise it’s not there. I don’t let it bother me when I do have it.

Also sometimes at night it goes away if I happen to wake up in the early hours, which is a pretty usual occurrence, only to have it start up when I wake up in the morning. Mines not venous, as it is clearly affected by noise.

Funnily I found recently on a couple of occasions when I went to places briefly with constant noise around 80db and wasn’t wearing ear pro, that it went away completely, only to come back slowly days later. I’m fairly sure for me that it’s a benign nervous system disorder affecting the middle ear muscles, as a result of past acoustic exposures coupled with neck and jaw issues plus other nervous system issues.

My hyperacusis has mostly recovered, yet this hum, some TTTS and middle ear cramping persists, although there are often remissions.
