No one i know has ever gotten disability due to Tinnitus, the thing is T is hard to prove, and witnesses don't account for much. The system is over saturated and under funded, nowadays it is extremely difficult to get on any kind of social program. I am putting my money aside so that if my T gets really bad I can retire early...sipping fruit cocktails on the beach somewhere just enjoying the sunshine and my TTTTTTTTT :grumpy:

In fact tinnitus is not difficult to prove or I should say: tinnitus that is debilitating to the point where it affects a person from carrying out normal everyday tasks because it affects their mental and emotional wellbeing. The majority of the people that post on this forum on a regular basis, or who are employed or at college etc, do not have debilitating tinnitus to which I am referring. Therefore, in most circumstances wouldn't be entitled to disability. I don't know how claiming disability benefit for tinnitus, works in other countries but know people in the UK that have tinnitus which is quite severe and affects them in the manner I've mentioned, who are claiming disability and rightly so.

This discussion is getting a bit disturbing, sorry. I simply am getting confused.

I'm from the USA, a rich and powerful nation, who lets its rich dodge taxes, and grinds the workers into pulp. Sounds like socialist , lefty nonsense, but it's me, it's true. Have worked hard my whole life, in industry and am self educated. Transitioned into teaching, and have always been broke. I can't work in schools now because of the noise. I have paid my dues and have taught thousands of kids to read, and have renovated hundreds of rich people's homes. I have told my boys not to be teachers, and not to be artists like me, how sad. People with handicaps are entitled to disability and help from the government. No body is freeloading, except the rich. We fight wars that cost billions and then throw our veterans a few scraps before they are homeless or kill themselves. Slavery? Rape? probably poor choice of words, exploited, used and abused may be more appropriate.

People with Down's Syndrome, hyperacusis, tinnitus, AIDS, are important as some smug little stock broker on Wall Street. We should get help as many of us are not fit to work. I push through, but my ears took such a beating I had to leave the schools and building sites. Have contemplated trying to teach online and am preparing to do that. Have considered crime, but wasn't raised that way.

Tinnitus sufferers are not bullshitting, and the number of people telling the truth would far out way the scammers. One missile could easily help half the people on this forum. I believe my country's priorities are wrong. We are entitled to help, and I hope we can get it. A bit more than food stamps would be nice.

I know how severe and intrusive tinnitus can be and the way it can affect a person's mental and emotional wellbeing. What I am about to say only applies to what happens in the UK, for anyone that has debilitating tinnitus to the point they are unable to work. If the benefit agency were to read a letter (post) such as yours from someone (a claimant) that says they have severe tinnitus, then they wouldn't be believed as the severe tinnitus would prevent them from writing such a letter. Anyone with severe tinnitus would be on medication or under the care of ENT and having some sort of treatment under the care of a Hearing Therapist or Audiologist.

How would one go about proving it? Also, would it be easy to pretend to have T?
LOL First of all, with people like you voting, it won't be rich and powerful for much longer. Second of all, regarding the rich dodging taxes:
      https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...xpayers-paid-majority-of-income-taxes-in-2016
"the bottom 50 percent paid 3 percent" of the total tax revenue
"The top 1 percent paid a greater share of individual income taxes (37.3 percent) than the bottom 90 percent combined (30.5 percent)."
"In 2016, the bottom 50 percent of income tax filers earned about 11.6 percent of total U.S. income. The top one percent received 19.7 percent of overall income"

In other words, not only those productive people had contributed more to the well-being of others (one's income provides a lower bound on one's contribution, as the value of one's contribution traded for the income has to be greater than the income, or the trade won't go through), but they are also basically the ones paying for all of the "government programs". But apparently it is never going to be enough.
Why is it sad that you taught your children to try to be productive and that others won't be forced to subsidize them doing whatever it is they feel like doing? Ok, I see how being denied access to other people's money (instead of having to earn it yourself) is sad, but c'mon now...
      LOL
      Yes. The "rich" are.
No matter what the voters do, they can't find a politician who would end all of your wars. Sad.

How do you know? Are you saying that given your experiences, a wallet full of cash will not be picked up by anyone walking by, until its rightful owner shows up?
      I agree.

Simply having a percentage of your income (or capital gains or goods and services) compulsorily deducted by a third party doesn't fit the definition of "slavery" either. Unless you're actually a trafficked subject of slavery for dubious purposes, you're not an actual slave by any measure.

Nice going in diluting the meaning of words meant to convey something horrific by using them in a melodramatic and emotive manner though.

I do not wish to divulge this information in an open forum because it can be misused, for the very reason you have mentioned in your post, so have gone as far as I'm willing to. However, if you read my two previous posts the clues are there. I am speaking only what applies in the UK. Tinnitus is recognised as a disability here but certain criteria has to be met and it's not something that can easily be faked or for someone to pretend, when they don't genuinely have severe and debilitating tinnitus.

I wasn't aiming my response at anyone, i don't agree with Bill's perspectives...but he has good points and it definitely makes one think twice about the subject. I've been in arguments with him before and have disagreed with him on a few things, but i admire his tenacity (one can still enjoy their rivals ideas while sternly disagreeing with their points of view).

For decades, I pay income tax, property tax, sales tax, medicare tax, social security tax, and on and on. Even though I never get a penny back directly, at least not yet, I am happy that my money had gone to help those in need, even though there are frauders. T sufferers can be as disabled as handicaps, if not worse for some. I am at least lucky enough that i can still work and my work is flexible enough that i can rest my ears as needed. I really feel for those of us who are less fortunate and wish my tax money will go out to them.

taxes aren't helping because the money isn't going to research to find cures at all, just keep people suffering on xanax and disability forever. Government's don't take risk investing in research, they just keep fuding the standard of care which sucks.

I'd rather suffer in pain without any instant help knowing a group of scientist is working on understanding the condition to find a cure, then just munch down on xanax and anti depressants and be on the pallative medicine/disability carousel forever.

IMO, it all boils down to the magnitude of the percentage that is being "compulsory deducted."

When resources are limited, everything goes by priority. An effective treament or even a cure in T is our priority, but nothing in general publics interest, because most dont even know such a torture even exist. Unless T becomes an epidemic, which BTW is more likely than ever because of abuse in noise exposure and drugs, there will be no priority for T.

I know this forum is global, but in the US to get disability benefits from Social Security you are supposed to be "unable" to do anything. I figure in their eyes if you are "able" to sack groceries, be a librarian, (quiet environment), you are not disabled. I guess if you could provide proof from your doctor you are unable to do anything because the condition is so bad that it prevents it then that might work.

In years past I've seen some perfectly able frauds on Social Security disability that work side jobs for cash. Somehow they qualified for whatever bogus condition they claimed. So if you have real bad Tinnitus I would suggest to give it a try. Report back and let us know how it goes.

The U.S. military gives up to 10% disability for hearing loss, and this includes T. Unfortunately, as with many entitlements, freeloaders go after this so it's associated with fraud. (Anyone out there know of a cheap detector? Message me and we'll sell it to Uncle Sam!) I'm waiting till I retire to make any claims for this reason.

      https://www.hillandponton.com/tinnitus-claimed-disability-va/

For US persons seeking disability for T who are not veterans, I don't think it's covered, but you should check. Workman's compensation may provide temporary benefits in line with how T is experienced (at first it's awful, debilitating, then you get better as you acclimate... )

Here in Australia to qualify for disability you need 20 points across all illnesses you list for disability.

In my case, for tinnitus, I got 5 points. They called me to explain that my hearing issue was scored 5 points based on: how well do I hear in a crowded room, would I be able to hear fire alarm in a workplace, do I need subtitle to watch TV... so this seems to be based on hearing loss and not tinnitus at all.

I have not been able to work for over 2 years now, no income but that doesn’t faze social security. And I paid my dues to this country for over 20 years but this is how workers are treated these days.

Statistics show number of suicides to be 8 per day here, well no wonder... between person's daily suffering from an illness, doctors' negligence and lack of care, and bills/mortgage to pay there’s hardly anything left but to finish it all.

When it comes to tinnitus, particularly severe tinnitus, politics is all the same across the spectrum. At least, the traditional left and right in the Western world. There's absolutely no support to help tinnitus sufferers financially.

People with moderate to very severe tinnitus are ignored and neglected. If no one can "cure" it or reduce the severity, sufferers should at least have better financial support. Many of them are already wanting suicide so the government probably doesn't have to support them for long anyway.

Good topic. Right now I can still work though make no mistake about it I have difficult days. For me it's more about the depression factor that this disease has caused. If I had it my way I would only work part time somewhere. On top of everything with my tinnitus, I have hearing loss in my files of my ENT dating back to when I was a child. Hereditary. Pretty sure I'd have a relatively decent chance at disability if the time ever came where I felt I just couldn't go on much longer.
