If the heqring aids are turned on, yes it amplifies things. Being outside combined with hyperacusis was not good. The audiologist then put pink noise at really low volume turning off the hearing aids portion which could dull some sharp sounds. My problem was I was never able to build up tolerance, began getting migraines, major ear pain, a lot of pain in my neck and shoulders which are easing off since I stopped using them.

I have modern Phonaks, too. But I have only white noise built in. And the possibility of Bluetooth...

      What can I do?

It depends on the type of hearing aid. The in-ear kind acts like a plug, and as such, can cut down on the outside noise, but the behind-the-ear kind with a small speaker element routed through the ear canal does not block the outside noise, so there is no way it will protect you against external loud noise.

And yes, in any case, good quality hearing aids will not amplify an already loud sound.

I wonder how something like this would compare... versus 1000s for a hearing aids...

I was sent this by my audiologist:

Please discontinue the use of hearing aids, I do not want your tinnitus to get any worse permanently than what it is now. We will talk more on March 4th...

That was in response of my advising her that it was creating additional spikes and worsening the baseline & having a hard time sleeping. In other words I have established that this type of therapy is probablynot right for me. It was not the 1st time I tried hearing aids as WNG's.

I just got the ones tonight that houses the battery in the neck piece... actually pretty amazing. At first I thought the earplugs weren’t blocking any sound... so I turned the fan on and put some muffs over the earplugs.

I still hear the fan a little... so I turned the hearing volume up... some background hiss and the fan was louder.

As a test, I tapped the plastic housing of the muffs... nothing! In other words, with the hearing volume up (maybe too high?) when I tapped the muffs the “clunk” may have been more than 85dB and the electronic earplugs immediately turned the mic off... so I heard no loud noise.

Pretty cool actually for $100 ( Amazon).

      @Momme
Do you have trouble hearing on a day to day basis? Your audiogram looks very much like mine...(sorry).

I have a similar profile and I was told by 3 different audiologists/ent’s I was unlikely to notice much of a difference in either T or hearing.

I would say yes. I have a similar audiogram and find my hearing aid helpful.
I don't see much of a downside in trying.

I think no doctor would recommend hearing aids with that audiogram. It is absolutely normal in conversational frequencies, although you may have problems hearing with background noise. But I don't think someone needs hearing aids with that audiogram.

Does it help with tinnitus or just hearing? My hearing looks similar to @Momme. I’m 95% untroubled by my hearing but the tinnitus is pretty severe.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it.

@GregCA what brand and model hearing aids do you use?

So I got my “hearing aids”... look like standard BTE hearing aids... but the tube came disconnected and fitting it seems to be a PITA... the universal model I am using uses a foam earplug.

Maybe I’m not jamming the one tube hard enough over the hard plastic hoop?

These are like the link I posted (#849 above)... they are electronic earplugs for shooting to be precise, and I am seeing if they will help hear coworkers while blocking out noise.

For regular hearing aid users... how robust and how well do they remain in place? I’m sure if I got a custom ear mold that would help, but would using headphones tend to knock them off?

My hearing aid stays in place really well, but it's not a generic one. The part that goes in the ear canal is a dome that doesn't fill the canal, and that is connected to the electronics behind the ear with a custom part (each ear is different and needs customization).

Does your ever separate at the joint? No matter what I do I can’t keep the tubes together.

Is your tinnitus in the ears or head? Does it matter when it comes to hearing aids?

Perhaps I will see if the clinic carries Phonak & trial them since a few of you seem to have some success with them.

Which is essentially TRT. My audiologist programmed notched white noise according to my dropped frequencies. Then decided to treat hyperacusis first by programming pink broadband noise.

      No.
Notch therapy attempts to trigger lateral inhibition. It has nothing to do with TRT, other than sending a sound stimulus to your ear/brain (which is very different from that of TRT).

      Greg,

Have you used notch therapy? Someone recently mentioned this to me.

      Thanks.
