I Asked Some Musicians on Another Forum About Tinnitus

Most of the people that responded were positive. Even the ones that were not positive, were still out playing. Just thought this might be helpful to the other musicians out there.

they all seem cool about having tinnitus. no drama there. wonder why? so much drama here

 

I have noticed the same basic trend on motorcycle forums, forums for heavy equipment operators, etc. I also know a lot of people with tinnitus in the real world, and none of them have ever bothered to post here.

There's a question of severity -- but there's also a question of anxious fixation, and the more time I spend in contemplative practices, the more convinced I am that for myself, anxious fixation literally increases severity.

My guess is that if they felt a need to find a specific place to discuss this problem in general, they would have googled it; instead they're asking other musicians, and I think that's probably healthier because despite having a lot of awesome people and a lot of good information, I'm not convinced that this forum is necessarily a great place to spend a lot of time if your goal is to just accept your tinnitus and move on with your life. If you are a musician discussing this on a forum with other musicians, then the basic intent of your interaction is still focused on music, and not on tinnitus.

Changing that focus may be psychologically hazardous...

 

It is also interesting to note the number of people who say that their tinnitus has not become unmanageable, despite continuing to play in bands for decades in some cases.

 

Its about the noise volume in your head that is all they arent superheroes volume is the key and i should know having habituated for 20 years when in the beginning I thought Id go mad.However last 6 years the noise is crazy and it does get you down especially at night when it gets louder and louder till its a wall of jet engines

 

Very interesting, I didn't know this... that T isn't considered the end of the world in some of these communities.

To these people, tinnitus is just the cost of doing business. A small one apparently.

 

A friend of mine I go to gigs with has a similar outlook. I mentioned to him I had given myself T a month or two after the original incident. He just said his ears had been like that for years and it didn't bother him. Never wears ear protection. Works on industrial engines for a living, which isn't a quiet job either!

 

I have musician friends who have T and some who don't.
Mine is worse I guess. ......
