Same for me but I think this is not enough...

I took an appointment with a hearing shop where they can make tailored ear plugs... Quite expensive but if it works better than regular foam earplugs, it is worth it ! ;)

I always have my earplugs on hand if ever there is a need. Although I seldom wear these since the last thing I want to do is become too dependent upon them, there is occasion when we go to a very noisy restaurant where the music is too loud and uncomfortable and I will place them in. Before being seated I will make sure the speaker is not near us although the noise does carry. I order these from Amazon:

Etymotic High Fidelity Earplugs, ER20 ETY-Plugs, Standard Fit Blue Tip, 1 pair

Love this thread, I think it's very helpful to know what others use for ear protection.

I use foam ear plugs for the occasionally loud noise in my house (vacuum cleaner or blowdrier). I have two kinds of flanged earplugs that I use when needed, usually in church during songs, some restaurants or at events with my kids.

One is LiveMus!c HearSafe plugs with 23 or 29db reduction. The other is DownBeats with 18db reduction. Basically I decide how loud the place is and how much protection I need and use that plug. I only use an ear plug for my ear with hearing loss and tinnitus -- unless of course there is an unsafe volume levels at 85db.

I really prefer the flanged ear plugs. I feel like I can slip them into my ears far faster than foam plugs, which need to be rolled first.

Which noise reducing ear plugs are good if you have big ear canals? I bought Alpine party plugs from amazon but they are way small for my ear canals.

I think one of the brands that I purchased had two size options. Hopefully another poster will have a recommendation, too.

Foam earplugs will block out all or most external sound and are useful when using: electric power tools, noisy garden equipment etc. They are not ideal for reducing external sound and one should use "noise reducing" earplugs for this purpose. If foam earplugs are used on a regular basis to suppress normal everyday sounds, it is likely the auditory system will become more sensitive to sound, making it hypersensitive and the risk of hypercusis becoming worse.

Similarly, noise reducing earplugs have their use. However, if they are used too regualarly the auditory system can be affected in a similar way as discribed above. One of the best ways to desensitize the auditory system, is to use sound enrichment and go out daily for a walk to get used to normal everyday sounds. This helps to close down the auditory receptors or gateways that have opened up in the brain due to noise trauma. Anyone with noise induced tinnitus with or without hyperacusis, will delay healing of the auditory system and the habitation process by overusing earplugs to suppress normal everyday sounds.

Yes it was for you ^^
Ok, I was about to suggest that kind of plug, but since they do not fit I will forget about this suggestion ^^

Can you hear the movie dialogue okay with foam plugs?

Thanks for posting which plugs you use, too. Do they stick very far out of your ears?

I have the opposite, small ear canal so find that the foam ones press too much, the musicians ones, I don't know how far to push in?

The wax ones work best for me in terms of comfort but not sure if I'm using them the right way to guarantee protection...

Maybe it sounds stupid, but have you already tried to cut a part of the foam plugs in their length so that they don't press too much? It should not affect their efficiency since their form adapts to the cavity

I've been researching wax earplugs for swimming. Any brands you recommend?

I can hear it decently enough, like some movies are more quiet dialog and it can be a bit tougher to hear it (we have subtitles as I live in Sweden) so if I can't hear I can always read. But I think it is the best option because usually the movie contain action scenes and that is when I want to protect my hearing most :) There are of course foam ones that have lower db reduction than the ones I have.

The Happy Ears one barely sticks out, also they are see through so even if they stick a little bit out, usually people don't notice as they are not in bright colors. The one I have bought are all white/see through although I know they used to make them in other colors before.
