Hi all,

I've had tinnitus and hyperacusis for many years. The hyperacusis is from MS, that's been over 15 years. The tinnitus has been about 3-4 years now.

What have you tried that has helped quieten it? I can find all sorts of ideas but would love to have responses on one thread if possible.

Mine is very loud, you really can't mask it without loud white noise, or the blessed shower (but staying in the shower all day isn't very productive lol)

Supplements?
Meds?
Exercises?
Devices?

I would be especially interested in supplements. I do take Klonopin at night, low dose and only when needed - generally when I haven't slept in a while.

Thanks!

Lauri

Thanks - are there any supplements that can help once we have it? I doubt mine is noise-induced.

I am not sure. There isn't much research to show one thing or the other.

No most definitely not - I have hyperacusis in the same ear.

You probably do have hearing loss, more specifically high frequency hearing loss. Most hearing tests are actually inaccurate and don't even test above 8 kHz, when humans can actually hear up to 14-20 kHz.

On another note, nicotinamide riboside (don't bother at all if you're still young though, it has to do with increasing NAD, which depletes as you get older)

Hello Lauri,

Very sorry to read that, but I am going to try to help you...

Supplements : Magnesium and vitamins B complex for energy and mood, black radish and artichokes for the liver, fiber complements (powder), drink enough water...

Passiflore and Valeriane for relaxing and good deep sleeping... :)

Anything that can help you relax and letting go negative thoughs in your mind... I suggest belly massage (chi nei tsang) which is VERY helpful for everything (all organs)... If you can go to thai massage or anything (not too expensive) do not hesitate !

Thermal baths are really good also to help relax, and under water you will not hear anything about T ! ;)

Try not to stay always inside, going outside can help you taking breaks from T !

All the best !

Christophe

@Christophe_85 it is good to read your posts again.

I personally do not believe there are any supplements that will "quiet" tinnitus. The best solution for me is to keep busy with some sort of project that interests me and takes that focus away. With the MS are you able to get out and move about?

Interesting side note. I have noticed doing on line jigsaw puzzles in my idle time somehow keeps my brain on a different focus. Weird. I never did such puzzle before.

How are you doing?

Exercise and sound therapy has been helpful to me. Mostly exercise (about 4-6 days a week). I use sound therapy when my spikes are crazy loud. My ears feel like they have a spike daily, but it can get even crazier at times....

Can you use non digital recordings? I have noticed while using headphones my tinnitus is bothered greatly by the digital recording method. When I transfer my music therapy to a cassette tape - the sound sensitivity is lessened greatly and this helps my tinnitus. No one seems interested in this fact or investigates the cause/effect.

Our world of sound has changed significantly. I cannot talk on my cell phone. I can use the landline.

Xanax and Klonopin quieted it for a period and then pretty much stopped working to quiet it during the day. Withdrawal can be a nightmare. It's not supposed to be taken long term. Perhaps once in a while as a "safety net".

Lithium Orotate, a natural supplement, sometimes seem to help with my tinnitus. Sometimes, it seems to take the high frequency tonal tinnitus that I have and change the frequency to a whistle and blend it in with the background noise better. It's kind of interesting. I think it also can help me habituate to it better but sometimes it seems to make me nauseated. With most people that don't have intestinal and nausea issues like I do in general, I don't think it would cause that. My advice would be to try the lithium orotate for a few days as I think it can help with depression and anxiety as well.

It's not a digital vs analog issue, and certainly has nothing to do with the recording method. Besides once the sound comes out of the transducer, it's all analog. Perhaps the higher fidelity of digital recordings in the higher frequencies is the culprit.

Also, Im pretty sure all phone networks are digitally processing all calls now.

I know this sounds crazy but I take 20 grams of taurine for 3 to 4 days when I get a spike and it seems to work. I take them all at once. I take 20 based on the 1 gram of taurine per kg of body weight. That is "suppose" to be safe. I have had no problems but talk to your doc first.
