Hey,

I first noticed my Tinnitus many years ago. This seemed to be a short stint.

More recently I noticed a drastic increase in my tinnitus in one ear. I also had reoccurring nasal blockage. I went to the doctor and then onto the ENT. They did the usual hearing test, MRI with it being one ear only, and did a quick examination and then follow up appointment. On the hearing test they noticed a slight dip in my hearing in the ear affected by tinnitus. But in terms of support and help there was little on offer to me, other then general advice.

I spent months looking for the answer to WHY I had the tinnitus, and HOW I could deal with such matter. I think it's fair to say at times it really got the better of me as I felt at a loss with it. I felt as if my tinnitus was continuing to get louder, and felt at times like I was going deaf. I was anxious as a result of the situation which I am sure many of you will relate to. I got that desperate I paid for private CBT to try and change my thought process on such matter. I found my self constantly researching and trying to find the answers.

So more recently I started to use a nasal rinse named NEILMED sinus rinse. It's amazing, my tinnitus has decreased a significant degree, certainly less noticeable. My hearing seems to be better also. I also purchased a facial sauna, which I know sound mad but worked well with Olbas Oil.

So should anyone out there have similar symptoms then please try such approach. I know from experience it's difficult but stay positive.

I am glad to hear your tinnitus lowered in volume, congratulations! I hope it keeps on decreasing for you :) thank you for sharing the nasal rinse tip, I think I am having sinus problems at the moment.

Are you sure it is not ototoxic?

I am sure, I think my experience has taught me to stop worrying and stop constantly looking for the answers online. I feel that this in itself raises anxiety and in my view prolongs such issue. Good luck

I agree with you on that, but it's diffucult to not be worried when you have a problem that may become worse due to a medication, but I understand where you are coming from and I hope I ease my mind from anxieties and handle tinnitus in a positive and free of worries manner. Thank you :)

My tinnitus went off the scale - it was there 24/7, and I seemed to have this constant feeling that my hearing wasn't right. Due to my experience I wanted to pass on my advice for such an issue. I suspect that until you control the anxiety then the tinnitus will remain problematic. I can only recommend to anyone suffering with similar symptoms to try such approach as you never know, it may help massively.

I know this is an old thread but is your tinnitus still decreased (or gone)? I started using the NeilMed sinus rinse recently and I can feel some sort of blockage in my eustachian tubes (when I blow my nose afterwards it makes some weird noises as if it's somehow blocked) but no reduction in tinnitus yet.

Perhaps you can update here how the sinus rinse has helped or not helped with your tinnitus. This will be helpful for members with tinnitus caused by sinus congestion.

I'm waiting for FESS surgery at the moment and this didn't help me, it wouldn't go out the other nostril  The only thing that helps me when it's bad is Sudafed. Keep pushing your ENT, mine wouldn't believe me and said my tinnitus wasn't sinus related. They did a CT scan to 'reassure me' and found that my entire right side (my ringing ear) was absolutely full to the brim! On the waiting list for FESS now :)

Ok, good luck with it. Guess I should make a ENT appointment.

This has really struck a chord with me.

My GP recommended that I start using Neilmed Sinus Rinse in order to tackle a persistent sinus infection. After five days of using it, I woke up with a very painful mastoid bone behind my left ear. This then developed into a persistent ringing sound, which has been with me nearly two months.

My GP thinks it's hay-fever related despite me never suffered with it before.

I'm convinced though that it's the sinus rinse as it never used to drain out of my left nostril. Is it actually possible that the rinse could be lodged in the tubes behind my ear? They say it's very safe but how do I know?

I saw an ENT specialist on Monday, who was primarily examining my larynx, but was also supposed to look at my ear. He forgot! He then recommended that I speak to a tinnitus expert...!

Did the rinse cause this? Or should I go back on it and see if it clears it up?

Did the rinse cause this?

@Fatar760 -- In my opinion, almost certainly it did. -- My sister once started using a Neti Pot to rinse her sinuses. Contrary to all the positive things she'd heard about and come to expect from doing them, she actually began to experience some bad things from using it. Once she stopped, those problems got better. But she was still left with the sinus situation she tried to correct by using the Neti Pot.

It seems your situation might be similar. The rinse you're using is somehow exacerbating the very things you're trying to remedy. It definitely seems like it's time for a course correction, and find something that works better for you. I'd recommend searching for a well regarded Naturopath, who is less likely to advise some kind of drugs or antibiotics that might make things even worse.

You might also want to experiment with some intermittent fasting (with an apple cider vinegar or lemon drink). Sometimes when I don't eat for as long as 18-20 hours, I get a remarkable clearing in my sinsues. The body can really do some amazing things when it's not expending a lot of energy on eating and digesting.

@Fatar760 Chronic sinus infection is known to damage your middle ear and cause tinnitus. Using the sinus rinse could just be coincidental but I think you probably developed tinnitus from the chronic sinus infection. I do hope you do whatever is necessary to mitigate future sinus infections as it might worsen your tinnitus.

Interesting that NeilMed was mentioned. I'd never even heard of it, but had surgery for a deviated septum in October and my Dr told me to start using NeilMed rinse. I have been using it for about 6 weeks but about 2 weeks ago I developed tinnitus which I'd never had before. I did feel the pressure in my ears change sometimes when I used the rinse. I feel there is a connection. Not necessarily because of the brand NeilMed but from using a nasal rinse at all. I am hoping this clears up on its own. From what I'm reading about tinnitus, it doesn't seem likely.
