Tinnitus Since

Cause of Tinnitus
chlorthalidone
I was started on the med for my dependent edema and it worked well. Yesterday however I developed very loud high pitched tinnitus in both ears. I looked up the med and their are a very few people who develop this after taking the med. I can't find any info on if it is permanent.

Has anyone developed this from a blood pressure type med and if I stop taking it will it improve. It is very loud, can hear it over the TV. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. I did a search on this forum with Chlorthalidone but no one has posted about this at all. But there are posts on blood pressure medicines and their effect on tinnitus, such as this:

Our notable member @Karen has posted about her experience with blood pressure medicines causing T and her decision to use natural supplements for controlling high blood pressure.

Generally when we stop taking an ototoxic drug, T will slowly fade over time. It may take a few weeks or months. Some folks do have their T stay even after stopping. But if that is the case, people still learn to habituate to it. So don't worry too much as too much anxiety and stress can aggravate T.

Also, if your loud T does bother you too much, don't hesitate to start masking it. You can at least set the masking volume to slightly below the tinnitus so your brain can learn to get used to this ringing over time.

Take care. God bless.

Hi, @Julia Harbeck ,

I read your post with great interest, as my very mild tinnitus became worse after taking a blood pressure drug. The drug I took was an ACE inhibitor, Lisinopril. My mild tinnitus became very loud, and about a month later, I also developed pulsatile tinnitus.

My doctor switched me from one drug to another, and I finally ended up on Toprol XL, a beta blocker. I went to a new doctor, and he helped me with my blood pressure, and ultimately, under a doctor's care, I got off the drug.

It is now seven years later. I am no longer taking any blood pressure drugs because my blood pressure is under control now. I do still have both tinnitus and pulsatile tinnitus, but I have acclimated as best I can, and am living my life normally again. Yes, some days are better than others, but I am doing okay.

It's possible yours may calm down in time, and/or you may acclimate to the sound, as so many of us do.

I would be interested to know what type of blood pressure drug you are on, and if there is a possibility your doctor could switch you to another drug that is less ototoxic.

Take care, and stay well, and I wish you calmer times ahead.

Best wishes,
Karen

I don't need the med for blood pressure as my blood pressure is so good but I have so much edema in my legs we decided to try it. I am going to call him today and see about a low dose of lasix instead, unless that causes tinnitus also. My husband has had tinnitus for years and I know at times it drives him nuts, now I know why. Thanks for replies.
