Hi all, I have had tinnitus since December 15th 2017.

I have gradually habituated and the tinnitus really has not been a problem for the last couple months.

Yesterday I noticed my hearing in my right ear would go in and out and I was dizzy here and there but I didn’t pay it much attention because I have been getting dizzy on and off for months.

Well last night I had vertigo pretty bad so I laid down and went to sleep and this morning I woke up to mild hearing loss and a full feeling in my right ear which is the ear the tinnitus is mostly in.

I woke up at 6am and freaked out! Of course

it’s Saturday and no ENT is available until Monday so I went to the ER all they did was give a quick look for wax (there is none) and gave me a 60 mg dose of prednisone then sent me home with a Medrol steroid pack which I have to get filled.

I am so scared this is permanent! Has this ever happened to anyone???

Update: it has been about 3 and a half hours since I took the prednisone dose and some of my hearing has returned BUT now I have a new loud tone of tinnitus in my right ear (the one with the mild hearing loss) I am so confused I have no idea what is going on

Sounds a little bit like Menieres disease, disease is a bad word for it though. Research it you seem to have classic symptoms.

You will see that if one begins taking Prednisone early enough, chances are one will be ok. You need to make sure that Medrol is as good as Prednisone. Consider printing the link above and going to another ER, asking for Prednisone.

It could be Meniere's Disease. I suggest you consult with your ENT doc at your earliest convenience and discuss these symptoms. @glynis

The increase in tinnitus perception may be the result of your hearing loss and not an increase per se. Hopefully when you hearing returns to it's normal state your tinnitus will decrease accordingly.

Before all of this back in Dec 2017 did you have hearing loss?

yes but the main trigger for tinnitus is hearing loss.

Hi I got Tinnitus the same week I was diagnosed with meningitis so they assumed that’s what caused it but I was also taking antibiotics and had an MRI and lumbar puncture all of which can possibly cause Tinnitus. Prior to the meningitis I never had issues with my ears

Hi thank you for your response when I woke up this morning everything was back to normal it was so weird I only had the one dose of prednisone so not sure that really did much and perhaps it was going to pass on it’s own I plan to still follow up with my ENT because that was scary

Glad things have improved. See your ENT and see what they say. Could be viral labyrinthitis....??
