      Hi folks,

Soon I will have a CAT scan for my ears/head. I'm having one of these instead of MRI because I am claustrophobic. Anyone else had one of these, and did it affect your Tinnitus?

      Many thanks.

I have had a CAT scan for tinnitus many years ago and had no problems. My tinnitus and hyperacusis were very severe. Try and not concern yourself with tests, medications or sounds making your tinnitus worse. In the majority of cases they don't and comments from negative thinking people on these topics will not help your habituation process.

      Michael

PS: Have whatever tests are recommended and forget about it and medications too.

I have had a Cat scan and a MRI and both didn’t have any affect on my Tinnitus!
You will do just fine, no worries :)

      Thanks Michael,

I supposed I was a bit worried about the radiation of a CAT scan. Im sure its fine in the context of things.

      Cheers.

CT machines are nowhere near as loud as MRI machines. But even then, MRI machines are not loud to the point where people can lose their hearing. They would not be allowed to operate if that was the case. But since people are concerned about the noise level, patients are routinely given ear muffs to use. If it's the loudness that you are worried about, then the CT machine is a better choice. But there you have the radiation. Still, the radiation dose is not higher than what you are normally exposed to by cosmic radiation in one year.

What kind of machine is it? Normally, both CT and MRI machines are doughnut-shaped ovens that they put you in. You could have a CT, an MRI and a PET machine next to each other and you would not know the difference. Could it be that you are having regular X ray? There are today modern, fully digital and computer aided X ray tables where you lie flat on it and a big laser guided, suspended camera moves above your body and shoots X rays. They evolved from the traditional X ray cameras and are not as sophisticated as a CT machine (the doughnut type).

I have had a CT scan of my head, and I mean one of those doughnut types (Siemens Somatom Definition AS). It did not worsen my tinnitus.

I don't think you'll experience any problems with a CT scan. I had one a year or two ago and it was a breeze. No side effects with my T&H. Unfortunately nothing was found with regards to the T&H or the headaches or ear pain.

Due to my severe hyperacusis having an MRI is not an option for me. I can't even do it with ear protection.
