Experiencing Tinnitus When Getting Sinus Type Head Colds

I've been experiencing tinnitus when getting sinus type head colds. It starts with a dizzy and nauseous feeling, then the tinnitus viciously snaps in at night.

So far I've tried combination of Sudafed and listening to pink noise which has been soothing.

Any other suggestions to help symptoms would be appreciated. Oh I'm in Wales, UK.

Hi Elizabeth,

Many things can cause tinnitus including the symptoms you mention which could be linked to ETD (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction) or other conditions related to the ear, nose and throat. Due to the complexity of tinnitus if you haven't already done so my advice is to see your GP and take things from there. The ear is a delicate organ and tinnitus can easily be made worse by doing the wrong thing regarding treatment and therefore, it's best to seek professional advice to find out the cause of your symptoms.

Your GP will probably try to treat you first before making a referral to ENT which is the right thing to do. However, if the dizziness persists or is accompanied by impaired hearing, problems with balance or acute pain in the ears, you maybe fast-tracked to ENT for tests. My advice is not to pursue private care, as you will get the best help and long term aftercare for tinnitus under the NHS that no private practice can match in the UK.

Using pink or white noise for sound enrichment is a good idea especially in quiet surroundings. It is important that this is administered correctly using a sound machine and not listening to pink, white or other types of audio through headphones or earbuds even at low volume, as there's a risk of making the tinnitus worse.
