Hello All. I'm from Sheffield, UK.

i'm new here. my name is dean. i live in the uk. i'm 49. i'm a musician; a rock guitarist.


i have tinnitus-it started in late july. it was caused by exposure to loud music. it can sometimes be very loud, it can be frightening and i panic. i also have pains in both my ears - sharp ones and dull ones. this issue of pain is one i don't see mentioned often on the Facebook forums i joined - i'm wondering if it only affects a minority of sufferers?

i also have hyperacusis and my ears feel like they need to pop/are full of pressure etc.

firstly i just wanted to say hello, however, if there are any other sufferers close by to where i live then i'd be interested in joining or starting a social group for fellow sufferers.

Hi @dean thom

Welcome to the forum. You have to be prepared to change your lifestyle if you want your tinnitus and hyperacusis to improve. Try to keep away from loud noise and I advise not to use headphones even at low volume. At night use sound enrichment in preference to sleeping in a quiet room. Please get ears checked out when ever you get pain as they might be a underlying cause .

It would be great have Tinnitus Hub/Tinnitus Talk support groups it would be amazing.

Your in the home town of the British Tinnitus Association as its in Sheffield.
Give them a ring about a local group.

thank you for your replies and the links. they are appreciated. i've had an ENT appointment already. I've an MRI in a week. i have a further ENT appointment to talk about CBT/talking therapies/mindfullness etc. I'm prepared to be stoic and resolute in my relationship to my tinnitus.

 

hi michael. i've found a couple of these links very beneficial. thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my opening post. i've learnt an awful lot about my tinnitus in the short time that i've had it including the highly unfortunate, and frightening experience of 'spikes'. how i wish this aspect wasn't a part of my tinnitus. i've 2 spikes in the 3 months i've had T, the 2nd of the two being by far the worst, 6 days ago. i truly was completely and utterly out of control and panicked, beyond anything i could ever have imagined.

i know it's going to be a long, slow slog in my attempt to habituate with no guarantee that i ever will. as i write this, i'm very aware of my loud tinnitus but i'm not panicked in 'this' moment, i'm watching tv as i type and i've been able to eat and keep food down after 4 days of struggling. i count that as a small victory.

I'm also in Sheffield. Been here just over 4 months.

There is a support group in these parts but I haven't been https://www.tinnitus.org.uk/sheffield-tinnitus-support-group

I confess to having only ever been to a single support session many years ago when I lived down south. Nobody there was within 30 years of my age so I felt a bit out of place

thanks for your message and welcome to sheffield..it's a great city.

i came across this group you mentioned the other day..it meets very occasionally/infrequently. they have limited places at each session but i phoned and attempted to book a place so hopefully that'll happen and i can get to meet some fellow sufferers. i'm actually out in the hope valley and feel pretty isolated out here.

 

You are definitely out in the country, I've been round it a couple of times since I moved here. It's nice out there, although I got bitten to hell by all manner of flying things.

I'm just to the south of the city, liking it here so far.

I also live in Sheffield, although I'm a student so it's not my permanent home. I've only had tinnitus for a month now but it's felt a lot longer! I'm also thinking of going to the group therapy session at the hallamshire hospital if I can get a place. Another service I've come across in Sheffield is the tinnitus therapy service, here's a link to their leaflet:

When I rang they said a GP referral is needed and waiting time is about six weeks, but it'd be great to see a specialist and get some help. Thought it might be of use to you!

I don't know how busy it gets but it seems the November 18th meet doesn't need booking (looking at the page).

It does seem like a useful thing, the notes say they have a hearing therapist, audiologists and a clinical psychologist. It's not often you will find an audience of specialists together like this.
