For the last 2.5 years I've had a fan on full blast EVERY night to help block out my tinnitus so I can sleep, I even take the fan on holidays. Last night I forgot to turn it on and was perfectly fine. I didn't bother turning it on tonight, I genuinely don't give a shit anymore. My tinnitus is blasting away and I feel 2/10 worried, I'm about to go to sleep.

If you had told me 6 months ago I would be laying in a silent room and not feel suicidal there is NO WAY I would have believed you.

Don't listen to the negative people on here, it DOES get easier.

What negative people? The people that say that it, unfortunately, doesn't get better for everyone?

It's awesome that you've gotten to a point where your tinnitus doesn't bother you (as much) anymore but we can support each other without ignoring that this won't be the case for everyone.

Edit: But I'm genuinely happy to hear that you've gotten better!

You're right, I apologise for that statement it was very insensitive.

      Great success story - Congratulations!

I still use the 'LectroFan sound machine to sleep, but I've been using fans and various mechanical and digital sound machines in the bedroom for decades, even before my tinnitus got bad a couple of years ago. I could probably go without it, and may try in the near future.

      Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the great progress you have made. Be sure to keep up the protection so it does not get worse again.

Any other wisdom to impart that helped the progress other than masking with a fan at night?

That's excellent news. I do understand your point and you are right about the negativity. It's just so easy to fall into that trap and I'm sure you understand that. There isn't enough optimism on here so this is great to read!

Can you describe your tinnitus? Do you hear it all day every day?

Is it high pitched? Multiple noises?

I have no advice, I wish I did! I have struggled immensely (if you go through my history you will see how bad it got). Around one year ago I was ready to end my life because of my tinnitus, it was just so bloody exhausting. I guess I got used to it?

I'm sure if I have a spike I won't be so relaxed but for now I'm good.

I can't remember what silence is like so maybe that helps too, I'm past the grief stage.

I have three different tones, the first one is permanent, I've had it from the start. It's a very loud static noise.

The 2nd one hangs around 90% of the time but did go away for a few months at the start of the year so I'm not sure if it's going to be permanent. It's a soft "eeeee" I have struggled a lot with this tone.

The third one is hard to desribe, it kinda sound like an echo? It comes and goes a few times a week. Doesn't really bother me.

I should probably add that I'm still very paranoid about noise and won't go out anywhere that may be loud. Although I'm more relaxed about the tinnitus my fear of loud noise is still very much there.

      @Holly1987

You are having a good tinnitus day. More to come. Still the most common success story is that tinnitus does no improve, but people do. Bittersweet victories.....

Yes but peace of mind is still peace of mind. The end goal is the same. It's still a very wonderful thing.
And there are some cases of tinnitus improving.

      Good to hear Holly.

I’ts been the anxiety and depression that was the worst for me. I think it’s worn off, and the physical symptoms of tinnitus bothers me less now as a result.
