      Hello everyone.
Maybe not quite a topic for a 'support' section but didn't know where to put it.

So during my year with tinnitus I red a LOT of sources as probably most of us did and thought a lot about reasons for my T. Recently I also got Visual snow addition to my lovely T.

One contributing factor I am thinking is alcohol. I personally was on 35 UK units a week for last 5 years, way over the medical limit, thought it never messed with my life or social responsibilities. So does alcohol cause tinnitus? I meet this idea a lot in an informal articles and hearsay, also my doctors were suspecting vascular problems in my brain (albeit with no hard evidence), but... a lot of people drink. There must be a serious literature on the correlation. Is there?

I would also be interested to hear your personal stories and thoughts on this connection.
Cheers to that! (Just kidding. Overdue with my sobriety)

@Andrey . Alcohol certainly brings my tinnitus down . I can see how this could easily turn people with tinnitus into alcoholics.

When I drink alcohol, it happens to be the moment where I tolerate this ringing best. I don't give a F once I'm drunk. I'm no longer anxious after a few drinks. I'm actually contemplating the idea of getting wasted every night and becoming alcoholic.

Red wine, the supposed T spiker, drops my T down to a manageable level. I have 2-3 good size glasses before dinner.

I'd have to agree. Before T I wasn't much of a drinker, just the occasional glass of wine on a special occasion. My mom and husband both suggested I have a few glasses of wine to relax. I decided to try champagne (the little bottles with screw off tops which we jokingly refer to as girl beer). It really does help me to forget about the tinnitus. I can't get much done in the evening, but I certainly feel less annoyed and disturbed by my T sounds--high pitched screaming jets and thunder. My T sounds are ominous. I've been working on not reacting with fear for a few years now. Still terribly annoying but less so with bubbly.

Hmmm. The title hits home with me. I relied on alcohol way too much. Made me forget about my T but caused way too many more problems. Caused family, relationship, financial issues. Please take my advice and dont go overboard like I did.

that consumption is quite low, 100 UK unit a week seems more reasonnable to speak about a little alcohol problem.

Drinking about 4 oz of white wine seems to help, and I tried that for a couple months, but then it got to where I wanted two glasses in the evening instead of just one. That's when I decided it wasn't such a good idea for me to rely on it, but that's just because of my family history.

It actually relaxes me more to have a cup of Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime Extra tea, with chamomile, lemongrass, and valerian. Something warm and soothing, a little ritual before turning in at night. CS also makes a tea called Tension Tamer, which contains peppermint, ginger, lemongrass, and eleuthero. It doesn't calm the tinnitus, but it does ease the tension a wee bit. Or maybe it's placebo, who knows.

12 beers a week is nothing. Cardiologists recommend that much wine. Relax

I'm also convinced booze doesn't cause spikes - anxiety about booze causing spikes does.

Two glasses of wine a should also not make you fat. It's like 300 calories. That's less than the bread on your sandwich at lunch. Eat better at lunch and enjoy the night.

12 beers a week is more than 80% of the USA consumes; the 12-drink "average" that gets thrown around is a mean value which is distorted by severe alcoholics on the upper end of the range who may consume 70+.

many of the studies showing a positive health impact from alcohol are flawed.

alcohol is a significant carcinogen in a dose edependan way. people who consume seven drinks a week are more likely to get a number of cancers than people who abstain.

all that said, i do not personally believe alcohol to be ototoxic in the way other GABA agents like benzos are.

I drink, but i have no illusions about what that does for my health, any more than i think riding a motorcycle is helping my longevity...

according to the chart that you're referencing (by decile) 60% of the country drinks one or less drinks a week. Just because you drink more than people who don't, hardly indicates dangerous levels.
I also suspect these numbers are under reported.

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ink-you-drink-a-lot-this-chart-will-tell-you/

The stress ir relieves will kill you much faster than less than 2 drinks a day.

For me, there's this nice brewery in Southampton called OPA OPA. They make these craft beers that are as delicious as they are strong.

My favorite is the OPA-OPA Double IPA.
