Hi everyone,

I am trying to find a doctor who may prescribe medication to help deal with/possibly lower the volume of my tinnitus. I suppose that a psychiatrist or neuropsychiatrist would be best suited to this task. Specialization in tinnitus would be a major plus.

Does anyone have recommendations for such an individual in or near New York City?

TIA:):)

NYU Langone has an an extensive Tinnitus In Adults dept., which I visited last winter, for an ear exam with an ENT. According to the hospital's website, there is psychiatric treatment available for adults with tinnitus.

I would strongly recommend staying away from psycho drugs - after a while they won't work anyway, and even have actually been the cause of increased or new tinnitus as side effects for some people

The best is to stay busy and active

You are in NYC I'm sure you can find ways to keep things busy

I agree with @Bobby B comments on medication for tinnitus but only up to a point. Used correctly certain medications and I'm referring to Clonazepam/Rivotril can be very helpful. One has to be in a person's position to understand what they are going through because we are all different.

In 2008 my tinnitus increased to severe levels and after two years of TRT for the 2nd time I had made improvement but my tinnitus was still severe. With my second noise trauma I was left with large fluctuations in my tinnitus. From: complete silence, mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe. It was now 2010 and for the first time in a long time I was getting depressed. I explained to my ENT consultant who was very understanding and someone I have a good rapport with. I asked her to please be candid about my condition. She said I was the 2nd worst tinnitus patient that she had met in all her years of being an Audiovestibular physician. At that moment I felt worse but she said she would never give up on treating me and kept to her word.

I was prescribed Clonazepam and advised to only take it when my tinnitus is severe. I was also told, of it's addictive nature and if it's taken too often after a while will not have any effect. It can also have unpleasant side effects. All I can say is this: Clonazepam for me was a literally a life saver for I was at the end of my tether and didn't know what to do. It is now 2018 and I have taken Clonazepam periodically about once or twice a month 2x 0.5 tablets for no more than 2 or 3 days, when my tinnitus is severe. I have never had any problems with it.

Yesterday evening I took 2x 0.5 mg Clonazepam tablets as my tinnitus has been severe for 3 days. It has reduced the tinnitus to almost silent. I tried to put up with it and carry on as normal but it was becoming increasingly difficult. I am a positive thinking person and have had this condition for 22 years. I also counsel people with tinnitus. However, my tinnitus can reach very severe levels and I'm thankful that I have the Clonazepam to take when I need it.

You haven't had tinnitus long but I advise you to speak with your GP about alternative medication such as antidepressant before taking something like clonazepam. Saying that, if your tinnitus reaches severe levels and it's more than you can take, I think you should enquire about it with your ENT doctor or GP. Please note, it shouldn't be taken regularly and long term and it doesn't work for everyone. Please click on the links below and read my posts that you might find helpful.

All the best
Michael
