Hi, I'm a 51 year old male living in Leeds, West Yorkshire. I have had tinnitus since 2016 which started when I was taking Sertraline for depression. I changed medication to Mirtazapine after reading of side effects causing tinnitus. The tinnitus didn't go away but until a few weeks ago was just a low hissing noise, not really audible unless I was at rest or thinking about it.

Recently it has become much worse and is now a high-pitched screaming noise. I have had some squelching noises in the left ear recently and have tried decongestants and ear drops to no avail.

This morning I noticed that it gets much louder when I push my jaw forward or stick my tongue out.

I have spoken to several health professionals and non of them seem to know what i can do.

Any help or support that anyone can give me would be fantastic. I am now off all of the antidepressants for three or four months.

I have Crohn's disease and take Mesalazine tablets for that, and it is well under control. I am otherwise fit, healthy and happy, but the tinnitus is getting annoying to say the least. Many thanks, Steven

@Stevieleeds ,
Welcome to Tinnitus Talk .
I would visit your dentist just to rule out TMJ as the jaw joint can become inflamed and as it is right by your middle ear and can cause an increase in your tinnitus.
Love glynis

This is normal. According to @threefirefour one of the upcoming treatments will only work for people for whom this happens. [I am having trouble finding that post of yours, threefirefour.]

Check out the thread below where I summarize everything (27 tips) I learned about managing tinnitus after reading the posts on this forum for the past year.

Interesting. But yeah you're right. I think it was deleted.

Anyways, to specify, I came across more details about who it will work on.

Susan Shore specified the device works on people who can modulate tinnitus by moving any specific identifiable muscle, perferably in their head or neck. So it works with that, but not for people who say, claim it gets louder with physical exercise.

This may suggest you have somatic tinnitus related to TMJ. Also you can try masking your tinnitus. You can use high pitched mature sounds such as heavy rain, cicadas, shower, etc to help you're high pitched tinnitus
