      Hi

My name is Luc, I'm 62 years old and I have had tinnitus for now 2 weeks. Very loud, high pitched noise in mostly the right ear.

I'm so scared and am seriously thinking about taking my own life.

Went to see an ENT that basically told me that I have to learn to live with it....

This noise is driving me nuts and I just can't imagine living with it........ Help

Sorry to hear you have T, I’m only 3 months in and it’s an emotional rollercoaster. The good news is it’s new and there’s no guarantee it will stay, if it does you’ll come accustomed to it so to speak. Do you know what caused it? There’s many different causes and if you can find out that could help in reducing it or make it go away.
There’s plenty of people on here to help and give advice.
If your feeling low, do you have family or friends you can speak to? Don’t suffer in silence, maybe go back to your GP and have a word with them about how your feeling.

Hello @lucnoel, it is nice to meet you. I am very new to this tinnitus, also. I completely understand your fear. Please know that with this being so new, there is a possibility that it will subside. Search through this wonderful forum and you will find that there are positive outcomes.

I agree with @Jcb, do not suffer in silence, talk to someone who is close to you, share your thoughts. Your coming here and asking for support was a positive step in the right direction, this I know from my own personal experience. I found this forum five days ago and I am in a much better place than I was because of it.

      Welcome to the forum.

Please seek some professional help from a therapist to help you deal with the depression and suicidal thoughts. Make this your top priority. You can’t try to figure out why the Tinnitus is happening if you are too depressed to function.

Start the diagnosis process to try to find a root cause. Some can be addressed with reasonable success.
Here's a flowchart you can use to work with your doctors.

masking it is the only real way to deal with it, have noises playing at night to sleep like rain etc. you can get apps on your phone or look on youtube for tinnitus sound therapy. How did you get the T? There are 3 parts to dealing with it i believe which are eating well, exercise and meditation techniques. I understand how your feeling, the hardest thing at first is wondering how the hell your going to cope with it and dealing with the spikes in the early days. It will calm down in time and become more manageable, as it does you will start to feel better. It just takes months so you need to be patient and work on calming down by using masking techniques. Things are going to be very different from now on but if you just work on doing everything you can to make things better it can and will get better. As time goes on you begin to fight it less and accept it more, which together with the fact it will settle down in time makes life more bearable. It will become nothing more than an annoyance in time rather than something that is sending you loopy.

Why and how did you try hearing aids? You don't mention hearing loss anywhere...
Did you do a hearing test with an audiologist?

Why did you try ear drops? (were you diagnosed with something that the drops were going to cure?)

I'm surprised at all the things you've tried without (seemingly) having any idea of what's going on with you, and you've only said that your ENT doc told you to live with it. You didn't mention him/her saying that you should try hearing aids, or try ear drops, etc... so where do these treatments come from?

You are right, did all those things out of desperation
The Ent did an hearing test and I have some loss in the low frequencies in the right ear only. And that was before he removed a good sized wax plug from that ear
He said that I could have meniere disease but I don’t have any vertigo
Still, want to a low sodium diet
I have an appointment next Monday with an ent that specialize in t

      I know the feeling.

But please keep in mind that tinnitus tends to fade for most people. So it might be a good idea to wait at least 6-12 months before doing anything irreversible. Try to ride it out.

Check out the thread below where I summarize everything (27 tips) I learned about managing tinnitus after reading the posts on this forum for the past year. The first tip provides a link to multiple studies that provide data on the fraction of sufferers for whom tinnitus ends up fading.

Well how did you try hearing aids if you don't have an audiogram?
Did the ENT do a Pure Tone Audiometry test on you? I'm a bit skeptical of your test since it was done before removing wax from your ear.
You need to do PTA with a clean ear, and only then you can trust your audiogram enough to configure your hearing aids to match your losses.

It's normal to be absolutely freaked out when you first learn you have T. We have all been there before and some of us are still there. I'm 6 weeks in and still freaked out. Don't let those drastic thoughts take over. Live day by day and try to find things that ease the anxiety. I understand it's hard.

Search this site for the positivity thread for some inspiration.

Listen to some music or something just below the sound of your T and that will help keep your mind off of it so you can take a break from the anxiety. If you go to amazon a company called sound oasis makes sound machines called the S650 and S5000. I have an s5000 by my bed for sleeping and a couple of s650's in quiet rooms in my house. You can choose sounds like the ocean, rain, white noise etc. and play them just below the level of your T. This will help your mind stay off your T and give you some peace. You can also go to YouTube and find recordings 10 hours long of rain falling. Here's one I like
Rain Sounds : 9 hour long Raining "Sleep...

I only tried hearing aids because my wife contacted some place that day that they could help me. Took the audio test with me and the hearing place put an aid on my ear but that did not help at all. She said that it can only help people that have hearing loss and o don’t seems to have it

Have you had any changes in your life that would be the cause of the ringing? Noise exposure, new meds, supplements, head injury, tooth or jaw trouble, ect......
I have had T 2 times from acoustic trauma. First time (12 years ago) it faded to zero in about 2 years. This time it has been 18 months and it has faded about 90%. (both times the T was screaming loud)
Most of the time Tinnitus is a temporary condition that will resolve itself, but it may take many months, depending on the cause/issue.
Get a noise machine (or download a phone app) for your bedroom to help you sleep. The sound of rain seem to help me the best. This will probably fade over time.

I was in IOP (Intensive Outpatient Therapy) 5 days a week for 2 months working on CBT and DBT. It's a commitment but I am in a much better spot in learning how to cope not to mention a better overall human with the skills I learned.

@lucnoel- I went to 2 ENTs plus audios, told me NO to hearing aids, but also went to my own hearing person and ask for maskers, I bought hearing aids that have maskers. They worked. Also, if you have anxiety with T, you will have to address that sooner than later. I've had T for 9 months I worked more on my body and soul to make it though.

Hi Luc, you may want to see my other posts for alternative opinion. Yes, I also contemplated ending life as the only reasonable option. In our case, the more reasonable option was to remove ourselves from the toxic nerve gases; but, it was a new home and nobody ever told us. My wife already had many, many, many tests. She was severely fatigued to the point of falling asleep a lot (as body tried to fight). Anyways, the ringing in the brain doesn't go away and takes time to lessen, in the case of poisoning like this.
Have you done a volatile solvents blood analysis on your blood? At least. Have you been to see an occupational and environmental specialist? Have you done a toxic effects core panel (includes volatile solvents (hydrocarbons) as well as four or so other panels of potential poisoning).
Obviously, our case may not be your case; but, many others in our neighborhood had this case; and the more people we talk to the more similarities we see. I live in bizarro land as even though the MSDS's list the dangers (some list more than others), even though the symptoms/injuries are clearly spelled out in scientific documentation, and even though the problems are well-known to be widespread with HVAC units - I STILL cannot get one single #@$%@# #$%#$% government employee at the town, county, state, or federal level to investigate ANYTHING. I did file two reports with the CPSC over a year ago and did drive them through my congressman and others to finally come to my house and take photos, as well as showed them other units at other houses; but, they STILL have not filed the report. One toxicologist we talked to told me it takes 100 people and several deaths. The problem I identified with the HVAC no doubt has injured millions on various levels as well as led to many deaths. The bizarre part is nobody will listen and nobody will alert the public.
Best of luck. Hope you haven't jumped off that bridge yet. My "21 gun salute" only lasted a few days. If nothing else, get yourself out camping with no smoke fire for a few days and see if that helps. The detox will kick your butt too; as the delay effect of nerve toxins and other gas poisoning typically hits that night and possibly delays 1-2 days. E.g. some of them make you feel "nice" (N2O). People would report "having the flu" after leaving our home. Took a few years for me to nail down what had happened due to lies and cover up from the HVAC manufacturer, HVAC service company, and builder and due to ZERO help from most all government agencies (city water did do a sewage back flow and county did check for a chemical dump record.)
      Cheers,
      Tim

Flowchart does not include chemical analysis (poisoning). This is typical of the medical professionals we paid. Once we determined it with an occupational and environmental doctor and volatile solvents blood analysis on your blood then the ironic part is Raleigh Neurology refused to even see us again to discuss. They were typical. Seems all medical people would rather you die than get involved in a lawsuit. And seems almost all have ZERO training in chemical affects on the body.
