Oh and my 12-year-old daughter won 1st place in her essay competition...
Take a look at it! Remember she's only 12, so be very careful what you say or I'll have to whip you severely!

How can I not cry at that! How she understands, at her tender age, what this treatment can possibly do to help me... us.:love::cry::love:

Essay Competition 804C -12 yo and under
In Competition 804 - Essay with a minimum of 200 words on one of the 4 topics below: The purpose of the competition is to encourage the next generation to research, explore and express the roots of Irish history.

      My Daughter’s Topic:
IRISH IDEAS & INVENTIONS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD : celebrates Irish ingenuity, including the engine that electrified the world, the engineer who invented seismology, and the Irish equation that put a man on the Moon, Irish people have changed the world —we changed the face of modern warfare, and revolutionized farming. We are better known for our writers, yet we also have a rich tradition of invention, from medical devices to military matters, from big ideas, to small things. Your essay should be about a great past or present, Irish invention.

A Cure for Tinnitus, Straight from Ireland

My essay is about a new treatment straight from Ireland, that can possibly cure my mom from tinnitus. My mom has been suffering from tinnitus for 7 years and I can tell is not an easy thing to cope with. I often see her crying and it makes me sad. As of today, there is no known cure/treatment for tinnitus. However, a new product from an Irish technology company, Neuromod Devices, looks like it’s going to change that.

So, what is tinnitus? For some it’s a high-pitched drone, for others a whooshing, hissing or buzzing constant sound in your ears or head. It is very hard to live with. It completely disrupts people’s lives. For instance, it makes sleeping, working, socializing or even concentrating on a simple task very difficult.

Thankfully, a team of Irish Scientist have developed a new, non-invasive neuromodulation device called the MuteButton, that can treat and possibly completely cure tinnitus or ringing in the ears. The company Neuromod was founded in 2010, in Dublin, Ireland. Neuromod has developed a bi-modal neuromodulation technology to treat chronic tinnitus, a condition that affects more than 10% of the population around the world.

So, how does it work? Mutebutton is a multi-sensory solution that combines relaxing sounds with the gentle stimulation of specific nerves in the tongue.

Bimodal stimulation doesn't repair your hearing, but it can reduce the hyperactivity in the brain that is your tinnitus. You listen to sounds through the headphones that are alternated with precisely timed, mild electrical pulses delivered to the tongue.
“The brain, and specifically the region of the brainstem called the dorsal cochlear nucleus, is the root of tinnitus,” said Professor Susan Shore, of the University of Michigan Medical School, “When the main neurons in this region, called fusiform cells, become hyperactive and synchronize with one another, the phantom signal is transmitted into other centers where perception occurs. “If we can stop these signals, we can stop tinnitus.” That is what MuteButton attempts to do.

Mutebutton consists of a set of headphones, a small tongue pad and a compact control unit. The device should be used for 60 minutes a day for a minimum of 10 weeks to get results. In clinical studies, the device has been shown to reduce tinnitus loudness by 42 per cent. Neuromod is hoping to have the device in the market by 2020.

This is like an answer to my prayers, because if the MuteButton works, my mom can get better and live a happier life. I can’t wait for my Mom to try the MuteButton. It is interesting how a small island like Ireland, may be the first country to find a cure for tinnitus. This would be a great accomplishment in the history of modern medicine in the world and for Ireland.
