Possible Root Canal

Hi guys and gals,

I have had quite a week already. On Sunday I was at a birthday party with 15 screaming little kids and thank goodness I was able to control my emotions and did not get a spike out that.

At the same birthday party, I accidentally got kicked in the back of the head and have had a bad headache ever since, but went to ER and I was fortunate to not have internal brain bleeding

Now today, I was eating an M & M and it crushed/chipped a piece of my teeth in the back and my uncle says that I might possibly need a root canal.

My blood pressure has been kinda high (i have borderline BP) and now I face a possible root canal.

I have heard lots of negatives and painful stuff about it, but my motto is this - IT IS, WHAT IT IS. I'm ready for everything that comes my way from this procedure.

My question is this - my uncle told me that they will give me a shot in the gums to numb it and then do their work.

Is this shot, the thing that can bother the tinnitus even more? Do they give me anything else for this procedure?

What things should I ask for when they give it to me and what should I avoid?

If I can avoid louder and even more hellish tinnitus (already at that level), then I am all for it. But if something has to be given and I have no choice, I am ok with that as well and it is what it is.

Love your positive attitude. I don't have an answer if drilling will cause spike or not.
I had 6-7 cavities filled 4 years ago and in didn't have spike. Root canal requires more drilling so I am not sure.
Injection they give you won't cause any spike.

 

I've had 3 root canals, one extraction, and removal of multiple amalgam fillings with no negative impact on my t.

I would get a dental opinion 1st. you may not need a root canal.

I would try to avoid RC for other reasons though re: trapping infection...

Completely get that you want to avoid worsening your tinnitus, but from my perspective, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

 

Here I actually have some solid knowledge. If you can afford it right now, get an implant. Root canals will eventually require an implant down the road so might as well get it now. If you can't afford one right now then get a root canal (it's not too painful), and then save up for the implant when the crown gives up the ghost.

 

I am not super excited about this, but it has to happen and i will not put up a wall of negativity in front of me. I know, that I have to see a dentist (I hate them and they are the last people..I want to see) and go through one of them to get this matter resolved. Life teaches us many things and makes us stronger if we learn from what we been through...

 

Ironically I was just at my dentist today for an overdue cleaning and exam. They were well aware of my tinnitus and hearing loss (my dentist examined me when it began to check if a jaw issue was contributing), and they were very accommodating. Kept tools on the lowest setting so that it would be quieter for me.

The dentist might surprise you! And if you don't feel comfortable or like the dentist, try out another. Don't hesitate to get a second opinion if you want, too. I once had a dentist tell me that I needed immediate extensive work (four crowns and eight fillings). Went to a different dentist and was told one crown and one filling. Nearly 10 years later I still haven't needed all of that work the first dentist suggested.

Unfortunately now I have an old filling that needs to be replaced. @Sean did you use earplugs or any ear protection when you had your cavities filled?

 

@Tinker Bell, I had my cavities filled may be in 2013 and I am sure I had used plugs.

I had my teeth cleaned 14 months ago and I had used plugs as well. Luckily I have no cavities any more but I need to get my cleaning done... too scared to go again.

I wonder if it's possible to remove plaques without using drill..just scrape it off?

Definitely! I was told I needed a crown. Went to another dentist who told me: you can probably get started with just a filling.
I was concerned with the shot, and he told me: if you want we can try and do it without anesthetic. And so we did. He told me to raise my hand when it would get too painful, so that I'd be in control, and we managed to go through it.

 

What I read is the opposite: it may calm the tinnitus, but only temporarily.

 

You mean to clean teeth laser is used ?

 

You Could consider extracting that tooth, and just live with a gap.

 

My T started after a dental tooth filling.
Since that day I have no other theory as to why I got T and H.
So...I sat in fear of going to the dentist for a year and actually cancelled Two appointments.
A few weeks ago I decided I needed to go and had both an examination and a clean that involved one of those high pitched drills.
And guess what happened ?...nothing...no spike...in fact I had an amazing quiet Four day period. One of the longest in over a year !!
Only goes to prove just how weird Mr T is !
If you need to get that tooth sorted @fishbone I say try and relax and just go for it.

The injection will be fine.
Just support your jaw with your hand if you can if its a lower tooth while your mouths open.
I had a wisdom tooth out last night and the tooth broke leaving the roots in but the dentist said should come out by themselves .
I'm in a lot of pain and feel like a chipmunk.

It's going be next Wednesday afternoon when have two back teeth removed the other side .

I have partially read in other threads about avoiding something or medicine in order to not increase the tinnitus. Is this medicine given after the procedure, so the patient doesn't get an infection? Like an antibiotic? If so, any ideas on what is good or bad?

@fishbone , Dentist normally give Amoxicillin 500 mg to prevent infection. Its not ototoxic and its very important you take it. Lot of times during dental treatment causes infected blood goes to heart valve and can cause infection in heart valve as well. Thats why you will see many times dentist will give 500 mg -4 capsules before treatment.

I remember you had mentioned you have High BP ,but you dont take any meds. First line treatment for mild high BP is lasix and hydrochlorothiazide ,. I think these both causes T but you if dont control BP it can damage your other organs( eg heart and kidney) and then you will have to take more meds for sure. PLus i think if BP is high, it will cause increase in T because all blood vessels are constricted. You can talk to doctor about taking blood pressure meds that will not affect your T..may be lisinopril( not sure if this is ototoxic) .

I am in health care industry so i am know about medications even though i am not currently keeping my self updated on meds.

sorry giving you bit extra info besides on meds besides dental meds you had ask, but i hate for such a good like yourself to suffer in future because of other health conditions.

 

I have never had a dentist prescribe an antibiotic following a cavity filling or even after a crown. For some heart conditions an antibiotic is required prior to dental work, but that is not necessary for high blood pressure.

Now an antibiotic may be necessary if you have a tooth pulled. Dry socket might be the infection you're thinking of.

 

I thought he might get his teeth cleaned as well. If doctor feels procedure will cause bleeding than they would write prescription for antibiotics.

I had mentioned blood pressure meds because I think @fishbone had mentioned in his post that he does have BP, but he is not taking any medications for it.

 

It would depend on the amount of bleeding. A little blood, no need to bother. A deep cleaning due to gingivitis, yes I agree that antibiotics would be recommended then.

There's no reason to take an antibiotic for bleeding.

Do:

1. Brush and floss regularly. If the root cause of your gum swelling is gingivitis, good oral hygiene is the first step to recovery.
2. Improve your diet. Add some extra fruits and vegetables to your diet, and avoid caffeinated beverages and sodas for a while.
3. Rinse your mouth with a salt water solution. ...
4. See your dentist!

You can make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water and rinse with that too, or buy a commercial product.

You only have to take care of the teeth you want to keep.

 

Thanks for the information. My blood pressure is mostly from stress/anxiety. my mind unfortunately runs wild 24 7 and the ringing in the ears really doesn't help me be at full peace either. I fear BP medicine or anxiety medicine in general because of the side effects it can bring on. I know in the future I do have to get a grip on this matter. I have lived a very rough life already. I just don't want to be controlled by side effects. I also know that It's risky for me to live like this as well....

I fought benzo addiction and it did lots of damage to my body and when on it, it was not helpful for my mind. What can i possibly take to reduce the anxiety? But, not have it control my mind and not give nasty side effects...

Folks, my Root canal went very well and I had no issues at all. Thanks to all that supported me

 

@fishbone , have you ever tried Benadryl for allergies ? It is also used in Tylenol Pm to
As a sleep aid . Tylenol pm has Tylenol and Benadryl .
Some people take Benadryl for temporary relief for anxiety . If it doesn't make you too drowsy you can try that for temporary relief . Some people take it every day ..you can take one dose in the evening and see how it works ..make sure you don't drive after taking it .

There are meds like buspar ,Paxil , Prozac ..they all help with anxiety . I haven't read up on these drugs but on these boards some folks got T after taking some of these meds .

There are several herbal meds also available in the market to reduce anxiety . Benadryl is old drug and I would try it out ..some patients takes it as much as 3 times a day and it works well for them . There is also medication call hydroxazine which can also be used for anxiety ..it is also used for allergies /itchiness . First I would try good old Benadryl .its not a sure but atleast it can give you good temporary relief which is much needed Manu times with T.

 

Whoa that was fast! I've only needed one root canal and it took a week to get into the specialist, make the crown, etc. Glad to read it went well!

 

If laser available instead of drill , I would definately go with laser .
