Tenants Turned Out to Be Vermin

When tenants turn out to be vermin, this is what can happen to a flat that just three years before was pristine:

Unpaid rent £15,000.
Industrial clearance and deep cleaning £4,000.
All furniture scrapped to be replaced.
Carpets scrapped to be replaced.
Kitchen units scrapped to be replaced.
Total estimate in the region of £40,000 to £50,000.

I had to collapse my beautiful career six months ago.
I feel like I am battling to survive emotionally/physically /and now financially.

Good job I'm only 76 years old, and still young enough to cope with all this!

Drugs - Drink - charming when we met them,
but in reality obviously hateful.
They left my flat six months ago, but refused to return the keys to me.
Under U.K. law the landlord is not allowed to enter the flat until the tenant has returned the keys to terminate the tenancy.
The flat has been locked up unventilated for six months through that long hot summer with used nappies laying all over the carpets, stale food, excrement......just appalling.

They own nothing so they know I will never get one penny from them.
I can get a County Court Judgement against them to stop them getting credit cards, loans etc...
but that is about all I can do SM.

I always treated them with kindness.

Over here it is sort of the same regarding owners vs. renters. Takes over a year to have such a person evicted.

It makes no sense whatsoever!

If there are used diapers and toys then there were children living in this mess. Here in the USA we have CPS (Child Protective Services). I know it will not reduce the nightmare of having this mess cleaned up, but you would be striking back a little as well as helping a neglected child by showing these photos to whatever form of CPS you have in the UK. These people need to be investigated and their children rescued from them.

I have always made tremendous efforts and contributions to charity.
I always did far more than 'my bit.'

Now that I need a £40,000 loan to cover catastrophic damage, at my advanced age, and am without an income, I may need to cut back on the charity contributions just a tad.

My quote from the clean up team just jumped from £3,000 to over £6,000.
Two rats nests - 16 adult rats + babies.
Hundreds of sharps (hyperdermics.)
Dozens of spent contraceptives.
Six month old used babies nappies left lying on what was a new carpet.
I had central heating installed before this young couple went in.
The waste rubbish is so dangerous that it now has to be hand sorted because of the danger of HIV and hepatitis infection.
There were plenty of sharps disposal boxes which had been in use (blood stained) which had been emptied all over the floors to cause danger and mayhem.
I am a decent guy, who always treated these tenants with kindness, and this is my repayment.

Buddy it's absolutely disgusting, I'm gutted for you. There will always be somebody who try's to take advantage of somebody who is kind hearted, this though takes the p##s big time. Obviously drug addicts and you say they had children, it's heart breaking.
Will you be selling up once they have sorted out this disaster?

Is this evaluation of your flat cleanup enough to add support to your complaint to social services? The fact there were children present for this drug fest greatly disturbs me.

I know they might be broke but I encourage you to seek legal action. This is not okay. If it makes it tougher for them, they may end up having to pay you back.

@Red - I am perusing a County Court Judgment against them for £14,000 unpaid rent, but will never see one penny of it - they are wasters, unemployed, losers, addicts, who will never own anything.
But at least a judgement will stop them ever getting a loan, or credit card, mortgage or tenancy ever again.
But my loss is collossal.
