It seems to me that tinnitus is currently riding a wave of popularity in terms of being mentioned on TV and in news articles.

It’s also interesting to read the comments.

The problem is they will mention TRT and cognitive therapies along with tinnitus and discourage hard science from finding treatments. They'll dismiss our problem as no big deal.

Seriously! Everyone, including therapists dismiss it by saying you'll eventually habituate. Like wtf?

Most likely due to the movie bringing awareness.

Tinnitus is almost universally underplayed, as if it is a minor irritant.
When you see a famous television personality talking about her Tinnitus, and yet clearly holding down a very high pressured job with great equanimity, and with little sign of any distress, it puts a homogenised aspect to a vile condition, that both ruins people’s lives, and takes people’s lives.
The truth of the matter is that often people lose their livelihood, their career, their families, their peace of mind, their spark, their joie de vivre, and maybe everything - including their lives.

“But surely if a television presenter can cope with very little sign of distress - then why can’t the rest of you?”
      “I mean - what’s wrong with you??”

      The answer is - “SEVERITY!”
      Which is always underplayed.

I tried to raise this point some weeks ago and had to virtually go into hiding, to save my life.
And now I’ve had the temerity to mention it one more time the indignant ‘posse’ will come after me once again.

      Well - I don’t care.
I will always tell it like it is.

Anycase - I can always retire to my Anderson shelter......

“Oh Shit - where’s my emergency rations?
....and I meant to bring a torch and a potty...!!”

Don’t shoot the messenger; I was just alerting you all to its existence.

Tinnitus is a spectrum disorder and should be classified as such so that it’s clear to everyone that there are varying degrees of severity. To be honest, though, many of the things I’ve seen recently have mentioned that for some it’s really loud and debilitating.

With that said, however, everyone’s experience is unique. Some can suffer horribly with mild tinnitus whilst others cope well with severe tinnitus, and vice versa. One size doesn’t fit all.

I’m glad to see it mentioned on TV. Awareness of the word gives more potential for people to google it and do their own research. Never hearing about it, at all, achieves nothing.

@Ed209 Thanks so much for flagging that up.

The video piece itself isn't much help - but does raise awareness - sickly doctor turns to camera and says... "there is no cure I am so sorry"

BUT the comments after... now nearing 1000 in only a day... are really interestin!
They just show how many suffer and how complex and diverse everyone's tinnitus is.
Tiredness, stress, anxiety come up continually as making it worse.
Everyone has to find their own way I guess.

I hope all you lovely hissers, ringers and whistlers are having the best day you can.
Let's look after each other because no one else is going to X

Both BBC and NBC anchors did a great job describing tinnitus the way it should be for awareness to the public. Nice to watch!

      Hey Jack,

What's your opinion on TRT? I know it definitely distracts from us getting a cure but do you think it's of much benefit it itself?

I have no experience with TRT, but I have done much research on it. I think that it is good that it helps educate the patient on what tinnitus is, but for how much it costs and how little it helps people I would never do it.

Again, this is my personal opinion so if you thinking about it do some research and see if it is right for you.

While talking about tinnitus on TV is great, until they spell it out to people that live bands/concerts, headphones, power tools, medications and alarms are as dangerous and potentially harmful as they are, they are wasting there time/opportunity and doing society an in-justice. Prevention is the only current cure for Tinnitus.

I tried it. It's overpriced therapy and white noise masked usage... and it's ridiculous. Now it c a n help if you have mild tinnitus I think, An endlesss wallet and two years of your life to give up.

As a resource, it can be educational. But for what they charge and how it is advertised... they say it's not a cure but they do advertise it as a "treatment"...it's a total scam. You will still have tinnitus and for what they promise the end result, you can easily achieve that on your own. My opinion.

I agree. There is a commercial airing daily. Combat military knowingly sold defective earplugs thru 2003-2016.

No doubt @Michael Leigh will disagree strongly with this. And people should really listen to him because unlike the rest of us his qualifications include having actually suffered from tinnitus.

      ...oh, wait.
