Hi guys,

In the south of the U.K. there is currently a viral cold going around.

I think I've got early signs of it and my tinnitus is really playing up.

Anyone else has experience of tinnitus worsening with cold-like viruses?

Cheers for the feedback!

Yes, every single time.

My hearing loss was caused by a virus, so getting a cold gives me an extra dose of anxiety, too. However, now my protocol when I have a head cold is to take allergy meds, use a nasal spray and stay on top of using my asthma inhaler.

Incidentally, many of my friends and family experience tinnitus when they have a cold, so it's not odd that we might experience a temporary worsening while we're unwell.

Hope you feel better soon!

What allergy meds do you take? I have a steam inhaler, some cortisone nasal spray and was thinking of buying something like sudafed if a cold hits me. Good plan?:D

I take Claritin. Allergy meds work different for everyone. Some people respond better to Benadryl or Zyrtec, but those always put me to sleep. It's unfortunately a bit of trial an error to find what works best.

I still need to do the allergy test, so i think i´ll have to wait with the medication for that. I´ll use in the meantime normal cold medicine.

@Elin,
Had a nasty cold virus all week and ears joined in the party.
Feeling better but still coughing and ears extra loud as lots of mucus hanging around...
We have to weather the storm till it gets calmer so be kind to yourself and rest up as needed.

If I get a cold it's a bet that my tinnitus will get worse until it goes. Not always but most times.

It's not a definite, it didn't happen at the beginning of my tinnitus. I used to specifically monitor it because I had read online that a cold will make it worse. And as all users of the internet know, once you've read it it's clearly a fact

What do you use do treat the cold?=)

Nothing, I just wait it out and try not to let it stop me in my tracks. I've tried decongestant but not really had any benefit to the tinnitus. I do occasionally treat it with alcohol, so I feel great in the short term, then have the combination of hangover plus cold that really is not fun.

Same, I bought a product called Sterimar Congestion Relief along with some sudafed. When I did the rinse an unbelievable amount of green gunk came out; it was disgusting.

My Eustachian tubes are still blocked up and my tinnitus sounds like the Niagara Falls. Especially on the left side of my head.

I just take paracetamol or with hot lemon and use a steroid nasil spray.
If it goes on my chest I have to up my asthma medication and daily steroid intake till the inflamation and coughing stops.

I've never had a cold and I've had the flu once when i was 6.

I often wondered what a cold was like, now i hope i never get it. I have hay fever for 3 weeks out of the year...benadryl usually solves that

I have the flu and got a crazy spike (my normal is 5-6/10 and this was about 8) and i took a Benadryl to try to sleep it off and now it's back to baseline.

I have no idea if it is related or not but thought I would put this out there in case it is useful to anyone else.
