Neuralink fixing tinnitus was always a maybe thing. The primary goal was bridging electronic computers with organic ones.

My opinion is that if it takes the lives of 8000 monkeys to find an effective treatment for tinnitus, it's worth it.

I'd also gladly undergo a procedure with a 65% mortality rate. A 35% chance of having a decent life and being able to go out again is better than 0%.

Sorry, but they aren't testing it at all for tinnitus. That is the problem I have with this thread. But hey, I guess we BS about all sorts of things on here, why not stroke Elon's ego while we are at it.

That is why I said "assuming that this product is even going to treat this terrible condition [tinnitus]." The product is being tested for Parkinson's, Blindness, Autism, and well-defined brain issues. Not tinnitus. Again, another reason we are misleading people on this thread, I guess again for some weird feel-good purpose, or honestly just to mislead and disinform.

The other point you make about drilling - my understanding is they are very small holes for deep brain stimulation. Sticking needles in the skull isnt drilling and is less invasive. You also arent left with a device in your head.

The proposed device is not small, per what Elon Musk says.

You are the one who disinforms.

Neuralink is considering tinnitus as one of the conditions to treat. This is from one of their presentation slides:

Where is the entire presentation? When was the presentation made? What is the source?

I would love for tinnitus to be something they are seriously considering. Then we would have something to talk about. But so far I have not seen anything from the source to indicate this. Even a quote from Elon.

But again, even if there was, I still would love someone to tell me they are going to have a hole drilled in their head. Anyone? Not a needle, not a pin, but a hole the size of perhaps a dime.

      And for how much?

Well, thanks, maybe I am wrong, but in that video they are very speculative about whether they can treat tinnitus. They also say these are the conditions for which DBS looks to treat, but at least when that presentation was made in 2019, it was speculative that DBS would treat tinnitus. Has that happened? I don't think so.

So I restate - yes, it is in this almost 4 year old presentaiton, yes they speculate they could treat tinnitus which is last on that list, yes, I don't blame some people for having hope, but I don't believe this will happen very soon. I have said that before.

But until you have direct evidence, I dont think there are serious plans to treat us. When Neuralink starts talking about treating us, and maybe that is this year, maybe it is in 20 years, let me know, and I will be the first to say, thank god, but at what cost, and how big is the hole? And how many monkeys did they kill?

Another science ‘sceptic’ I see. Unfortunately animal testing is part of developing treatments for humans. There is zero chance of Neuralink going ahead with clinical trials in humans until the tech is safe. You talk 30 years (don’t make me laugh). Synchron has chips in brain already. DBS, pacemakers, Cochlear Implant also.

Ya seriously. They stick metallic rods in your brain for deep brain stimulation.

they are still conducting clinical trials for deep brain stimulation. This guy has no idea what he is talking about.

I agree it is a question of capital and motivation. Anyone with megabucks who wants to find a cure could find a cure imho. I believe implantables are one of the most probable methods of achieving a cure. Neuralink needs human trials ASAP but for some reason is behind others like Synchron.

They just announced positive long-term safety results and have FDA approval to move forward with clinical trials. Recent press release.

Only thing I'm wondering is that, so far, they're testing it as a one-way device - i.e. pick up signals from the brain and translate into actions. How would it need to work to help with tinnitus, depression or other disabilities that require stimulus back to the brain. I'm assuming it's a case of sending electrical signals back to the appropriate points in the blood vessels. A lot of work/research still to do I suspect, but very exciting stuff...

Treatments like this sometimes depress me because, while they may prove to be effective someday, I feel like they’re 10-20 years from being fully realized... like I’m a witness to the infancy of possible solutions that won’t come in time for me. So much is yet to be known about tinnitus and hyperacusis. And I sometimes worry we’re in the “stone ages” still when it comes to medical breakthroughs. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Reading through this and seeing what I’m seeing, they got a lot of work to do... and I mean a lot. It’s annoying to look at this negatively, but it’s just how I feel. I’m sad that a treatment might not come in time for me. These are evil conditions that wage war on time itself—the good ol’ days become bygone treasures; the future passes away; the present lies desolate, like a barren wasteland. :(

Exactly, it's just devastating, to know that from now on, there is not much joy to experience. Death seems like most exciting when there is not much hope.

Take great hope that in the next decade AI and computational power is going to go exponential. Supercomputers run at 1-2 Exaflops nowadays, but by 2027 they will be a Zetaflop (1,000 Exaflops). This is hard to fathom.

This will lead to breakthroughs sooner than you think.

Ya, I dunno what to do, @Geatly. Feels so hopeless. Tinnitus and hyperacusis are truly diabolical. No matter how bad they get, they’ll never take a life—they can only drive the sufferer to do that. I don’t feel like that’s an option, though, due to my spiritual beliefs. So I truly feel trapped. I hate to think I’m destined to exist in perpetual agony for the next 40-50 years. I’m only 36. Death, as you say, seems appealing, but not if you’re going to be punished for doing the big S. Depends on what you believe spiritually. But hoping for a heart attack to take you is definitely not living. How did we get to this place?

My tinnitus feels like electricity shocking me constantly—sensations of literal pain. And I have severe loudness hyperacusis, too. I look at people with “normal” problems and realize how blessed they truly are—someone in good health, but dealing with a messy divorce; someone who works 3 jobs to make ends meet; someone who has an illness, even, but can still relish in the pleasures of life. They think they have it bad; most people don’t realize what bad really is. People with normal problems can still carry on and rebuild their lives. The constant electricity has robbed me of everything. I just dunno how we’re supposed to exist like this... where you feel like you can’t even breath almost. It’s absurd and cruel.

@Jerad, it says in your profile that’s you have recovered twice from tinnitus. What did you mean by recover? What makes you think this can’t happen again?

@Gb3, I never fully recovered from tinnitus since I got it in 2002. I just habituated because it was mild. I had spikes along the way over 20 years that always came back down (from either med reactions or sound events). I recovered from significant hyperacusis a couple times during that time, not 100%, but I’d say about 80-85%. I have always had at least mild hyperacusis since I developed it in 2005. Reason I worry about recovery now is that I’ve gotten astronomically worse, both t and h. I took turmeric, the herb, for back pain last August. After 6 days of regular dosing, it caused a huge hyperacusis relapse.

A few weeks later, I tried sound therapy through headphones because I didn’t know it wasn’t safe. I thought it was the same as WNGs, which I used to use and have no problems. They broke, though, so I tried headphones. Big mistake cause it caused a loud, vibrational hum to develop that pulsates in my left ear. And it made my tinnitus reactive.

Then, in November, I somehow developed a leg ulcer that got infected. I avoided antibiotics but the ER had me use Neosporin topically for a couple days. It seemed ok but then I had a bad spike with new tones and worsened hyperacusis again. I tried to let the ulcers heal naturally but they got worse and I tried a topical colloidal silver after extensive research. Couldn’t find any bad stories where it hurt tinnitus. In fact, some said it helped. This was my worst mistake because after 8 days I developed the hissing, zapping, unmaskable tinnitus that also hurts physically. Hyperacusis didn’t seem to get worse that time.

So I’ve had like 4 worsenings in 8 months because of bad luck or getting screwed. I worry I pushed it too far accidentally and that’s why I am concerned about whether I can recover. Is there a limit? Like did I use up my 9 lives? I dunno. These problems are so individual so who knows for sure.
