Hi folks - one or two friends have asked if I can put a few video clips up, so even though I’m a bit embarrassed about it (I thought they’d never ask) here goes. (@Elfin )

I played jazz trombone in New Orleans, Dixieland and Swing styles.
Please bear in mind that these are clips that are mostly recorded by people in the audience, so while most are quite well done, they may not be professional videos.

This very old popular tune has a nice melodic little verse,
but I must have been feeling a bit silly.....

      Absolute love this @Jazzer

Been going through these at work. They have such a smooth transcendence to them. I'm immediately transported to a cocktail party in Gatsby's garden...the sun is setting and the green light shines upon yonder pier.

Bravo on all counts! Jazzer to the core!

      “WOW - such lovely sentiments.

Speaking of cocktail parties at Gatsby gardens - for over twenty years I have played and organised the jazz for the week of Royal Ascot, playing to the crowds for five hours a day, as they arrived in the grounds.
Sadly now of course that comes to an end.
The crowd would ask my little Dixieland trio, called Sousaphonia incidentally, to play any tune that they wanted to hear.
They often tried to catch us out, but we knew thousands of tunes, and usually had it covered. We knew how to ‘think on our feet.’

We played anything, from Louis Armstrong - Duke Ellington - Parsy Cline to the Beatles and beyond.
(However, we drew the line at anything from ‘Meatloaf’ or the ‘Dam Busters March.’)

A few bits of nostalgia here for me:

First my own jazz club called “Sylvie’s Place.”

Hi JCB - I’ll be okay.

Massive life change for me of course.
Jazz musician, bandleader, fixer, club owner, career etc..... down the proverbial pan.

I’m just having to get used to the ‘quiet’ life.
But one thing I do know......I’m not a quitter.
My job now is to make something of my life in other different ways.

Thanks for your support bud - I so appreciate good guys like you,

      Jazzer

Of course, it’s a huge change. Music was your passion, still can be but maybe not playing the instruments as it’s not worth it affecting your health anymore (which is more importmant)
I’m sure you will find plenty of things to occupy your mind and hopefully find another passion or two.
You’re a true gent Dave, and I wish only the best for you mate, I truly do.
It’s a tough old road, but you’ve got to roll with the punches and try and keep that fire in you.

Just stumbled across an old crowd-filmed vid of my own. Seems like the best thread to share it in, if any .

What I remember of this is that someone had booked the wrong day for the rehearsal room, and we had a black tie ball gig (which needed this song included), that weekend. So, Dave, my bass player (and good friend), said he’d put us on at the open mic night that his mate runs. So, we went and did our rehearsal there instead . Only problem, was that only us 4 could make it, hence the lack of a keyboard solo, saxophone, and drums.

This is what I call learning as we go. Dave often dumped songs on me, for charity gigs and such, and I’d say when we playing all these, and he’d say tonight . Great times though. Back when I had long hair as well.

I should have loads but ain’t got anything. Somewhere out there there will be videos of our gigs. I just ain’t got them

That clip is literally our first run through the song, so it’s not the greatest. Would be better if I had some clips of actual gigs.

As you will know Ed, the roll of the trombone in traditional jazz is to complement the tune with harmony and counterpoint.
In other words, not to state the melody.

On this ballad medley (not great quality film) I get to play the second number,
      “You Made Me Love You.”
      (I come in at 1m 35s)
This is the way I love to play a melody.
I call it ‘cheeky chappie’ trombone.

I have to mention TFF that this piece has nothing whatsoever to do with jazz.

To be jazz, a piece has to ‘swing’ and needs to contain aspects of ‘melodic improvisation.’

Maybe this piece is relevant to something - I don’t know - but it sure as hell ain’t jazz !!

@threefirefour - I will bow to your superior knowledge on neuro-science every day of the week (you appear to know what you’re talking about)
but on jazz - I’ve been a player, featured soloist, band leader, promoter, club owner and blah blah blah (all the usual shit) but I’m big enough to admit that you pulled my leg,
and I fell for it. (you swine.)

At the Dresden International Dixieland Jazz Festival 2013, with “The Jazzaholics.”
Massive venue, with much echo, but a very prestigious Festival to play at.
That afternoon while setting up backstage with no lighting, I fell over a TomTom, and cracked my ribs, went to hospital, got bound up, and came back to play - painfully.
