I think it's very appealing for the doctors who would rather blame the patient for their symptoms rather than admit they don't know how to help.

It's also appealing for people who want an excuse to write off suffering loved ones rather than put the emotional work of being patient, and truly empathic long term support.

This happens with so many diseases. My friend has a strange, clearly hard to diagnose neurological illness that they first thought was GBS. After CT scans, MRIs, spinal taps, nerve conduction studies and bloodwork (and CSF titers), they still don't know what's wrong with him. So rather then refer him for a second opinion (which would be the sensible thing), his doctor asked him how much of his symptoms are psychological *in origin* simply because he admitted the symptoms made him anxious (not that they were the cause).

Keep in mind, he was hospitalized for a week because he couldn't walk and his thigh muscles fasiculated widely non-stop for 15 minutes at a time. At least no one at the hospital was ridiculous enough to tell him a psychologist could help him function more normally with paraparesis but in the aftermath, when he can actually walk but weakly, I guess it's fair game.

 

his neuropyschological model was basically wrong on hyperacusis.

It wasn't until 2015 that Fuch's study on Noise Induced Pain/Noxacusis challenged Jastreboff's dogma. But remember The big J had 25 years going on before the scientist caught up. Damage control is still yet to arrive as people with noise induced pain are being given TRT.
