Who here has TMJ besides me? I know me, Alleycat, and Carlyi are the TMJ trio of this site. But who else here has TMJ tinnitus, and what helps with it?

Yesterday night I massaged my muscles near my TMJ joints, and my tinnitus went away 100% for a few minutes, and is quieter today.

Are you referring to T modulated by jaw movement at the dorsal cochlear nucleus, or to T as a direct result of a TMJ problem? A huge proportion of T sufferers have the former.

Mostly the latter. There's two groups of people with TMJ tinnitus:

1) people with tinnitus as a direct result of TMD
2) people with TMD and coexisting tinnitus.

The recovery rate is much higher for the first group but also very good for the second group.

How do you know which group you are in?
I don't know. Maybe if you're 99% sure it's noise tinnitus, or another cause. I know I'm in one of these groups but I'm not sure which. I thought it was most likely the second, because mine was probably started by earwax, but now I think it may be the first.

It's obviously more disappointing to be in the first group, if these groups exist. Hope that's not the case for you. Either way there are some researchers that get quite excited about the somatic modulation side of things (e.g. Levine) and possible treatments. In the end you probably won't care whether it's gone or not, so there's always that to look forward to! Best of luck.

Sorry I meant second of your groups
Is more disappointing !!
Yeah you're right, but it's not a terrible position to be in. Success rate for reducing tinnitus in that group is about 75%. So if you have tinnitus and TMD, it's definitely very worth it to get the TMD fixed.

What about if you have T and no TMJ problems but have a lot of somatic modulation by jaw movement. That's the big group. Worth doing something for the TMJ anyway? I'm not at all convinced on that.

Probably not, but that group has somatic-influenced tinnitus. Biting down for a minute and seeing what effect it has on your tinnitus (makes it louder for a while), then that's a >50% chance that the tinnitus can Ben reduced by tmj treatments, so if you fall into this group, it's good to see if you have any tmj issues.

I got my TMJ (TMD) from an accident. Weird thing is my jaw popped right back in place and everything was healing and T was almost gone 3 1/2 months into it. Then boom jaw is out and I have crunching/popping jaw. Not to mention crazy pressure and elevations issues. (Ears will no longer adjust on their own.) Hissing/static noises along with all kinds of buzzes and wines. I went to a chiro to get my jaw back in place.

I now just get massages for my neck, shoulders, and tmj. It helps, but I've never not had tinnitus since it got worse. It just seems to get louder when I do jaw movements.

I've noticed some improvements with my ear pressure not being quite as crazy and my chaos symphony of noises has lost a lot of the noises. Though I had to quit my jaw exercises as it kept ticking things off and in September popped it out of place again.

I've been seeing people talking about splints, but really I can't afford most of the next steps required for TMJ. I trade work for the massages as it is now.

I have TMJ tinnitus. Popping my nose causes my jaw to click in my ear and it makes it go away for awhile. But that is just in 1 ear. The other side of my face has a more severe TMJ problem (more pain, more hyber mobility, more clicking) so that trick does not work. I am going to the doctor in a week to see what can be done about my TMJ, probably nothing. TMJ doctors should just quit their job since they do not help anyone.

My TMJ is really bad and a Maxillofacial specialist said l was a candidate for jaw surgery but as I have tinnitus through Menieres it would not cure my Tinnitus.
