Sudden Hearing Changes, Tinnitus, and Fear of Steroid Treatment After Past Trauma

Hello, I’ve been reading this website for a long time. I’ve had tinnitus since March 2016, when I was in my teens. It started suddenly, the day after I listened to a guitar piece called Aftermath. It sounded so peaceful, but the next day, when I went to high school, my hearing changed. It was...

Hey @PeteJ, sorry this is off-topic from your question. I’ve been reading some older threads and came across several of your posts from 2019, when you were at your lowest point. I was wondering how you managed to pull yourself out of that mindset of not wanting to be here anymore. Seeing that...

Skiing and Snowboarding — Do You Wear Earplugs?

Hello @Deamon22, this is a really late reply to your post, sorry about that, but I’ve noticed I have the exact same problem you had or still have! I don’t want to wear earplugs because of the occlusion effect, and I don’t know what else could block wind noise or the sound of my skis scraping...

@ColinUK, the brutally honest truth is that FDA approval is expected around 2029 to 2030, based on what I saw in the presentation. For the rest of the world, it may be between 2032 and 2035. Ultimately, it’s no longer on my list. Yes, there are drugs beginning clinical trials that may have...

Tinnitus Worse After Attending a Concert with Hearing Protection

I didn’t consider that, since it had always been fine before with foam earplugs. It might have helped, but I can’t know for sure. No concert is worth it though. I would have been just as happy watching it at home, where I can control the volume. Lesson learned, I guess!

Ultrasound 'Helmet' Could Treat Many Neurological Conditions

@Jupiterman, this is an area of interest. Why? Because, as @hey pointed out, it can stimulate areas of the brain that were previously only accessible through an implant. We know that deep brain regions are responsible for transferring signals, with the medial geniculate body in particular being...

Struggling with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis: Why Are Audiologists So Misinformed?

An audiologist I visited several years ago told me that the tests another audiologist had performed on me, which made my condition worse, should never have been given to someone with tinnitus. So there are at least some who have an idea of what they’re talking about. I don’t think it’s only...

I hope it’s gotten better for you. I didn’t imagine myself being back here either, since I was doing well, but I went to a concert a couple of days ago with good foam earplugs and I’m having a pretty bad setback right now. Hopefully, it will get better in the coming weeks and months.

Sound Annoyance and Worse Tinnitus After Out in a Loud Venue (Measured at 97 dB) for One Hour

I know the feeling. I went to a concert a couple of days ago with proper foam earplugs rated at NRR 33 and SNR 38, and I’m still having a massive spike. I’ve been to social events, clubs, pubs, and even one concert before with similar plugs, and those never affected my tinnitus. But this time...

NAC May Have Helped My Hearing Loss, Although It Definitely Gave Me High-Frequency Tinnitus

That’s one of the hardest things about tinnitus. No one really knows what causes it or why some people recover quickly while others take longer. I definitely think that 75 to 85 dB after reduction can cause a spike or problems. Struggling with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis: Why Are Audiologists So Misinformed?

If you have a severe case of tinnitus, you are wasting your time speaking to so-called “experts.” Severe cases are rare, and an audiologist or ENT may not even encounter one in their entire career. If you have multiple noises and your tinnitus easily worsens from further noise exposure, then...

Struggling with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis: Why Are Audiologists So Misinformed?

This is not unusual. Your tinnitus is reactive. My own tinnitus researcher in 2024 commented that tinnitus is often quiet in the morning, then gets louder in the evening and is loud at bedtime. Tinnitus reacts to everyday noise by increasing in volume. Since you don’t have loud tinnitus at...

Unfortunately, yes. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. If you wear earplugs all day, every day, you’ll end up more sensitive. You want to teach your brain that normal sounds are safe. Use ear protection only during loud activities like vacuuming, and try not to be in the room while running...
