      Ear infection? Maybe.
I've had tinnitus for 3 years this May and I've yet to see a doctor about it. I've been thinking about it though, and was wondering how other folk got on when they saw their GP. Did it help at all?

It only helped when they gave me klonopin or xanax or something to deal with the depression. I screwed up by taking klonopin too long and now it increased my T.

I can truly say My doctor was fantastic.
My Menieres and tinnitus got fast tracked to ENT and had a MRI and tests and hearing test quite quickly .
Has given me lots of support and would love him be my doctor for ever.

I take him lots of info and leaflets and magazines from the BTA and keep him updated with info and the Tinnitus support group I run with another lady so he can refure them to us.
Doctors get a raw deal but I could not wish for a better doctor regarding my Menieres,Tinnitus and sever asthma...lots of love glynis

Going to the doctor can help in someways, but there is no cure for this thing called tinnitus.

A DR can help you with:

      hyperacusis issues
can help you with choosing a hearing aid that can possibly mask the tinnitus.
possibly seeing if you have an ear infection, that is making your tinnitus louder.

DRs will not cure tinnitus, but they can help a little :)

No. Doctor did nothing - in fact made it worse by making me panic about it and telling me there was nothing I could do about it. An ER nurse rolled her eyes at me and told me to "get over it"...

I had far more success going to an osteopath and massage therapist.

      Gave me an ENT referral

Started me on antidepressants and herbs. Call this help if you want. No fix......

I live a stone's throw away from an Eye and Ear Infirmary where people come from all over the world to receive the latest and greatest medical care, and I am sorry to tell you that no, I don't think that they helped me at all. I went within a few days of my trauma, perhaps it was too late to respond to prednisone. I'll never know. The only good thing about going is that I feel that I have tried.

Going to a psychologist who himself has T + H is the very best thing I did.

No help from docs here. My regular doc just pats me on my back and says I am fine. Ent says he cant do anything but prescribe nasal spray and come back in a years time for a follow-up. Although, did have an mri done not long ago. Issues with my neck/skull came up(which I beleive is the T cause) , but I have to wait a year to see a spine specialist . Bs.

Didn't do any good. No one can tell me what's causing my tinnitus except a guess, possibly hearing loss, anxiety and stress. I have never been exposed to excessive sounds or anything else. Doctor's didn't do a damn thing.

So far, I've gotten nowhere. I have 1/3rd the hearing loss that most T patients have - my VERY highest loss is 15db at ONE frequency (6kHz) at age 21 which still isn't classified as significant hearing loss - but I still have horrific T. The majority of my audiogram has a 0-5dB hearing threshold up to 16kHz (very sensitive hearing).

Through extensive testing, I've figured out that there is no underlying pathology, no reason for my T - I just have a constant, meaningless screeching sound in my ears and one-sided (unilateral) agonizing ear pain/fullness/pressure.

      Drugs barotrauma
I went to the doctor when I got T from barotrauma, had a very very slight hissing T (could only hear in silence) with some ear pain, was prescribed ciprodex ear drops just in case there was a infection. A few days taking the drops I lost a lot hearing and from that day forward have tinnitus that has totally ruined my life. Man, if I had just not gone to the doctor or was informed enough to know that meds can cause hearing loss. Still can't believe that you can be handed this shit with absolutely no verbal warning from the doctor. I guess it's my fault for not doing my own research and trusting a doctor. I wonder how many lives they have destroyed.

On Tuesday my GP gave me otomize ear spray because my ear canal looked red. One of the ingredients is nemeoycon which i beleive is otoxic so i won't be taking my chances with it. It was your story that i remmeber reading about and when she first said ear drops i thought of your story.

Totally useless. Not only that, they couldn't even fathom as to where my Sinus issues come from. (I fucking woke up literally the same morning and I couldn't breath at all out of my nose.)
All the stuff with my jaw and the fact that when I blow my nose a lot of times, the air gets forced directly into my left E.Tube. All i've heard is "You look totally normal, you've got amazing hearing" "Everything else could probably be TMJ related, you've got a really bad bite, you should see your dentist about TMJ"

Xanax which is ototoxic for tinnitus?
      They didn't help you.

Find another doctor and you'll find out that your tinnitus was caused by blowing your nose too hard or depression so you need Xanax.

The understanding Doctors have of side effects is very limited, and at times almost casual.

GPs are pretty useless when it comes to tinnitus. They are gateways to ENTs who are also pretty useless when it comes to tinnitus. Basically they know there is nothing they can do and simply go through the motions.

Eh. My doctor just said i was looking for attention and that my symptoms made no sense. Well, he sent me out the room(though I am 16 and should have been allowed to stay in when he said that) and told my mother that. So in my experience, no.

I found one doctor really helpful, who has now unfortunately retired. The other doctors I saw were of no more medical help than our refuse collectors.
My advice is, keep going until you find a doctor who listens and is willing to prescribe medications, when necessary.

problem is medications are not the long term answer and then most people are faced with other issue's due to the medications prescribed

I went to the best guy in the country who's involved in researches, has recognition, etc etc

he suggested playing music in the background at night and call him when i get meniere's (as if a natural development)

that's it apart from multiple ENTs and GPs

The people who have been helped generally don't come on this forum (some do, but most don't, since they don't need help). I've been getting great help recently through the health service. I'm speaking to perhaps the top tinnitus specialist in my country. Feel free to PM me.

I never had the sinus issue with the air going into my ear until I got T. Everything was pretty much 100% normal before. And what's funny about that too, is that my left ear is the least problematic when it comes to T and hearing loss. All my issues are in my right ear mainly...even though my jaw/TMJ are more problematic in my left.

There is very little drugs related to mental health that are not listed as ototoxic. Also, ototoxicity relates more to hearing loss than T, though T can of course be a side-effect which often goes away once the drug is stopped. I really urge against warning people off drugs which their doctor has proscribed, especially in relation to mental health. I fell into this fear myself and avoided treatment. If we all avoided drugs which had the slightest chance of bringing on T, we would take nothing. It's best decided by patient and doctor.
