This isn't the only company to be slowing down now. The cost of short term loans for businesses in the US is absolutely skyrocketing. That and inflation is still very high so the cost of carrying out the trials is now much higher than they first would have expected.

Maybe that's not the reason but it's one possible reason.

 

Their Phase one trial was finished back in 2015. The current inflation and interest rate rises didn't cause companies from picking up the drug back then. They were even ahead of Frequency Therapeutics.

I agree, something is very fishy here. I feel bad for all the people who donated to them. Other researchers could have benefited from that money.

@Moderators, I think you seriously need to consider removing Hough Ear Institute from the worthy causes list. There has been 0 progress in 7 years.

 

I'm honestly a little scared this isn't going anywhere. There's been very little information out there on this drug for as long as it's been around. Oblato not fulfilling the compassionate use could be economic but if that's the case, the same can be said for other companies. Hopefully this just means Hough Ear Institute will go through other methods of testing for Phase 2 and we'll get a definitive answer on it being effective or not. I'm still holding out positively for good things in the future but I'm sinking my hopes for compassionate use.

 

You know when you are over the target. I asked on Hough Ear Institute's Facebook page if there was any literature to read that their pill could treat 'chronic' tinnitus.

I was removed and now cannot see the Facebook page.

Mention the word CHRONIC to them and watch them self-implode.

Those guys leave a really sour taste in the mouth. Justin De Moss creeping on here looking to fleece people by misleading them. Maybe America is different, but in the UK a 'non-profit' organisation behaving like that would be outed quickly.

Surely whether government or donations, it's OUR tax payer money?

Private biotechs acting like this I could understand at least.

Lol, let’s give a drug that would potentially help a lot of people to just one person, give other people hope they will get it too, then shut everything down and say screw you, nobody else gets it. But then let’s have the one guy speak at an event about how it helped him and rub it in all our faces. I can’t, I just can’t. It actually makes me laugh thinking about how amazing Hough Ear Institute and Oblato are.

I can’t make it up everybody, this is real life. Its almost 2023 and there’s nothing for hearing damage yet. Ugh, I’m not a negative person when it comes to this stuff, but my god this stinks.

 

Are we sure it worked for that person? Maybe they are going to say it made no difference.

Another email sent out by Hough Ear Institute contains this story by tinnitus sufferer Scott. At the end:

Can someone catch me up to speed on what types of tinnitus this will work for? Only noise induced?

Is there a timeline when this will be available outside of compassionate use?

 

Lol, Hough Ear Institute are claiming NHPN-1010 will give people complete silence. Does that make anybody else laugh? I’m sorry, I’m going to keep saying this, and many will agree; any drug that would completely cure tinnitus, would take 8 years just to get to Phase 2. They were making all these claims and statements 6 years ago in 2016 when I got tinnitus. 6 years later nothing has budged. Hey, I understand they are a private company and need funding, but I don’t know, if the drug worked as well as they say it does, there would be no issue to find more funding. And they did get $2 million from the government a while back too.

Hey, I’m all for optimism, but this is at the bottom of my list. And there’s no way a pill could treat hearing loss and tinnitus better than an intratympanic injection. Unless this drug is magical from Jack’s bean stock.

I have just read through this thread. Very depressing but in a way typical. One testimonial is not that impressive.

 

One of its ingredients is NAC lol. I believe we could already assume that 50% of the pill is useless, seeing how NAC rarely (or not at all) helps people's tinnitus or hearing loss. Hough Ear Institute is a joke.

 

A drug on its own and two drugs together are completely different. You're being overly pessimistic.

@star-affinity, I know it's fake! From what evidence I can scrape together (not much), they have a pill that is otoprotective. In layman's terms, if taken just before or VERY soon after exposure to very loud sound, it will prevent permanent hearing damage/tinnitus. Nothing more and nothing less.

@LostinTX may be able to help with regards to the 'tinnitus testimonial', the person who will testify the pill cured their tinnitus at the forthcoming donors event. Did you say they had an acoustic neuroma?

Either way, the devil will be in the detail. And it's one anecdotal event to leave us clutching at straws, which in Hough Ear Institute's case, we won't be!

 

Oh boy, another company with a miracle pill/cure "we will have it on the market in 2020" - lol.

 

Fortunately, for most, tinnitus improves. So finding someone like that is not difficult.

But did the pill in this case help him? Maybe he would have had the same improvement if he took a sugar pill.

 

This scares me so much, a recession/depression leading to a serious conflict will kill funding for the [insert hearing related term] Therapeutics companies. Russia/Ukraine and now North Korea/Japan scare me oh so much.

Recessions don't last forever though. A year or two and inflation will be fine again and the FED will be back to handing out cheap loans to everyone.

I find the above kind of noteworthy. Respite or habituation from tinnitus occurs most often within the first weeks or months of onset. For the chronic variety it is much less frequent.

By concentrating on the early onset patients they really are "fixing the cards" before "dealing" so to speak.

Well if they use a control (placebo) group who also have early onset tinnitus and they can show that their pill results in more success in the treatment group, well that's fair enough.

But then you would get bogged down in like... if the placebo group were three months from onset and the treatment group were three weeks from onset...

Boy, can things get complicated.

 

Or just two groups of chronic patients, one arm treatment and the other placebo?

 

I wonder that too. It would be interesting to know what the person who had taken the pill said.

 

Did they not give the pill to many different people in the Phase 1 trial? I can't find any information on the results.
