I actually had a fish tank for a little while back in November/December. I was going to get a fountain but figured why not see if a fish tank motor would help, and I could have some pretty fish to keep me company. But I ended up moving in the middle of December and decided to just return the tank.

I’m beginning to think my high frequency tinnitus must be pretty loud, else I wouldn’t hear it in almost all environments. All of my other tones are tolerable and somewhat maskable, but this one tone is completely insane.

I don’t see how I’m ever supposed to be okay with this.

Same here. And it’s reactive too. On off on off every other second...

It doesn’t need be loud because most environments don’t cover such a HF screech.
      Water masks mine.

Water masks mine also. Though I can’t live my life sitting in the bathroom with the faucet on, lol.

It’s been 17 months for me, so honestly I’m not counting on more improvement. I’ll take it if it comes though.

My tinnitus is also of a very high frequency and does not blend in well with environmental sounds. That is why I gave up on masking in a very early stage. I think the fact that I decided to accept the fact that my tinnitus is not easily maskable helped me get used to the sound. With getting used I mean no longer getting an anxious reaction. Habituation came later.

Do you have multiple tones? I have a tone that is faint but high pitched which sometimes buzzes my brain because of the frequency.

I had gotten used to my high pitched tinnitus pretty quickly. But it has gotten worse since April and while I handle it pretty decently it does get on my nerves a lot still. I hear mine over pretty much everything but the loudest of sounds and the shower. I just bought some really nice studio monitors, and while I can tell they sound absolutely amazing, I still have that disgusting high-pitch ring over top of everything I listen to on them which is a bummer.

It is mainly one tone but if I listen attentively I do hear other tones.

My high pitched tinnitus comes and goes. I experience it mostly in my right ear but my left ear can chime in for good measure.

Generally speaking, I feel like mine is very annoying but not overly loud. I say this because last night, while driving back from visiting a friend, my right ear all of a sudden went absolutely crazy and the high pitch tinnitus was really loud. There was no masking at all and it was so frightening. I couldn’t sleep. I kept wondering if this was going to stay this way. Asking myself what I could have have done to cause it to get worse. It’s only been that loud once before and it was very short period of time.

It’s better this morning. I’m also highly congested and having a tough time with my TMJ. I have no measurable hearing loss in my right here by the way. Only thing I can think of is when I arrived to see my friend, she has four small annoying loud barking dogs. And they were barking and barking and barking and I measured the decibels at 108. I kept trying to plug my ears. They finally took the dogs outside. But they weren’t barking very long it’s not like I was exposed to this horrific noise for 10 minutes. Maybe 3 or 5 minutes by the time they got them outside. Perhaps that caused the spike.

So now I just live in terror that it’s going to happen again.

I know this is an older thread but I was wondering if you had other suggestions around how to mask? I don’t have an Android. I’m having the same issue but I’m having more days that are loud and intrusive than not. Before it was very rare that it was very loud and now it seems to be pretty persistent over the last 2+ weeks. I’m trying to figure out what could have caused the spike but I am just at a loss. Meanwhile working is really hard as it’s hard to focus.

Before, when I has a loud day, I didn’t let it bother me too much because then it was followed by many days where it was quiet. Now I’m terrified that it’s just heading in this direction of going to be permanently loud and drive me literally insane.

Can I ask what caused yours? I know you wrote, I was just wondering if you were willing to share. No worries if you’re not comfortable.

      Do you have hearing loss?

I had hearing loss from old tinnitus and vaccine set off my new one. I did have some events months prior though like dizzy episodes and random louder ringing. My guess use of headphones killed my hearing then the COVID-19 shot set it off.

Have you had your hearing checked? Do you know what kind of hearing loss you have? Do you experience hearing loss, e.g. can tell your hearing is worse?

Also, regarding the COVID-19 shot, my ENT said she has seen a number of people with either exacerbated tinnitus or a new presentation of it and it seems to be very transient and short term. I still haven’t been vaccinated yet however. Drives my husband crazy. Especially since I have to fly to Los Angeles on Monday.

Be very careful in LA. A few days ago we were said to have worst COVID-19 surge in all of the US.

Yes I have hearing loss but I think it’s higher frequencies. The doctor said I qualify for hearing aids. Hopefully they help.

Lots of noises can cause spikes. They can be immediate or delayed. It's difficult to identify which noise unless you are exposed to certain noises often and if there's a pattern.

All you can do is try to wear earplugs if you know a noise will occur in advance. But, that's near impossible in our noisy world but we can do it for some situations. The inner ear is damaged and can't tolerate certain noises (and frequencies anymore).

I'm okay with rivers. I actually like them. But, I can't camp out beside them 24/7.

Around last year, the noise of water falls bothered me a bit but I am okay with it now. I don't know if I would say it masks my tinnitus but I prefer to have another noise in the background like that as long as it doesn't spike my tinnitus or cause ear pain.

The sound of rivers flowing or small water falls is welcome.

Yup rivers plus some wind blowing through leaves is pretty nice :)

Unfortunately I don’t like camping and helicopters...

Thank you. I will be masked up. I basically plan to spend most of my time my sister-in-law’s house floating in her pool.

Did anybody habituate to freaking loud medium frequency hums?
