I've had tinnitus and TTTS for about 7 weeks now. The TTTS is painful and my ear flutters in response to some percussive sounds.

The zygomatic maneuver that I posted elsewhere gives me temporary relief. Does TTTS tend to improve over time or is surgery the only answer?

Does surgery have any risks? Why not do it?

The risk of increased tinnitus from cutting the eardrum. Also, I believe that the muscle is used to modulate noise.

Just wondering if it go away on its own or with pharmacological treatment?

TTTS ( Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome) is usually treated by counselling and using sound therapy, to treat Tinnitus and Hyperacusis. Once these conditions improve the TTTS will too.

My TTS went away over time (though it still thumps when I burp!).

A combination of Mindfulness and low doses of rivotril helped. I was able to function perfectly normally while taking the medication and it had no side effects.

The specialist I saw was Gerald Brookes at the Harley Street clinic in London. He has actually written about the condition. If you are in another part of the world, it still shouldn’t be difficult to at least make e-mail contact with his secretary or the man himself. Perhaps he might then be able to recommend a colleague with similar expertise closer to you.

Note: I am only a very occasional visitor to this forum and so will not be able to respond to any subsequent queries you may have but hopefully I have provided some info you can run with if it is what you are looking for.

It has a lot of risks. You would be cutting the muscle responsible for dampening sounds when they are loud. The muscle contracts when loud noise is heard to protect the ear from damage. Additionally, it protects damage from eating or talking, making our voices and chewing seem less loud than they could be.

I have always thought that cutting those muscles is a bad idea. I hope there are alternative cures in the future.

Hi @COYS -- I have severe tinnitus, hyperacusis, and reactive tinnitus, all of which have stayed pretty constant since onset in Feb. 2018. I also had TTTS at onset, but it dimnished over the following months, and eventually went away. I'm now waiting for the tinnitus and hyperacusis to do the same. -- BTW, I believe my TTTS went away because of my DMSO/Magnesium Oil regimen.
