I can imagine, it’s dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t kind of thing. Life just gets you like that sometimes but you need to just try and stay positive. I’m the exact same in regards to finishing a book even if I don’t enjoy it.... it’s annoys the life out of me :banghead: Yes that’s the problem sometimes trying to find a book that hooks you in, I’m really enjoying American Gods atm.

      Hi @Jcb

Hope you are enjoying your new Kindle Oasis.

Try not to push yourself too hard. I was unable to read for two years due to tinnitus. When I resumed I had a lot of difficulty. Each book I picked up within a short while I put it down never to return to it. As I have previously mentioned, it was the Author: Peter James' book Dead Simple, that helped to get my life back on track even though it took around 4 weeks to read it, due to the large fluctuations daily in my tinnitus made concentration very difficult. That was in 2010. My tinnitus still reaches severe levels and when it does, I just put whatever I'm reading aside until another time when I feel better. I am now awaiting book 14 of Peter James, Roy Grace series to be released on May 17th.

Take it easy and best of luck
      Michael

I’ve downloaded quite a few books so far including 2 Peter James books. I’m trying to finish American Gods then I will start on my kindle. I really like the look of it and the feel more importantly, it’s a lot lighter than I thought. I received my HD light as well which looks great.

You will like the HD light that I'm sure. Please be warned, Peter James' books are terribly addictive and you'll find his writing style flows with ease and has the ability to put you centre stage in the action and you won't want to put it down. A while back, a fan was reading his Roy Grace book whilst out walking on cliff. She got so engrossed in the book, lost her footing and fell breaking her arm. Not the smartest thing to do...

Well by some miracle I managed to finish American Gods. I will have to read it again as I don’t think I got the full benefit due to my stop and start method since I started it. Think I will try a book on my kindle and see how I go. :bookworm:

      @Jcb,
      Thats lovely to hear.
I have missed the last two books by a lovely Author due to my ears.
The first was a gift and a moderating post caused that person upset not intentionally and sadly decided cut contact.
I may send it back with his article.
      Love glynis x

      Did anyone here mention: audiobook?
I mainly listen to audiobooks, well I hate reading. But I could imagine an audiobook being like audiobookmasking sounds.. in a way:p Does that work?

Thankfully I can read and block t. as long as I have the maskers around... It actually helps me relax when I am reading a good book.... and a little snack. :).

Audio books are good if you love to read but have trouble with focus or concentration. It's not quite the same as seeing the letters on a page and reading the book yourself but it works very well for me!

I’ve put reading on the back burner for now haha it was getting me too frustrated so I’ll come back to it in a few months. The kindles great, still not the same as a book but I think I will like it once I get my reading flow back.

I’m sorry to hear that Glynis, that’s a bit pathetic if they have cut contact with you over something like that. Especially somebody as lovely and diplomatic as you. That’s their loss :huganimation:

I feel you. I've been struggling with read still. Though I randomly picked up a book and maybe because it was dryer I could read it. The one I've been trying to read since March is a love letter to reading and I think it just hit how much I miss reading.

glynis, I use to listen to books on CD,s when I drove to work, has anyone tried listening to recorded books on CD,s or downloads with a speaker pillow, so as not to disturb their tinnitus. I was wondering if this would make any difference or not? Sleep deprivation has messed up my memory some, I remember less now than I use to, and it takes a very long time to recall things, than it did before. Having "Dumb Brain" is not a good thing, especially after rereading some of the things that I have posted.

I'm watching the sunrise as nature comes to life
Drinking my hot brew that warms me through and through
A peaceful time to relax, when colors return
And the sun sends its warmth to melt the morning dew

Hope your having a better day! TinA#7oct

Now I’m totally with you there, I was looking at my books this morning and thinking how much I miss getting swept up in the pages. I think I may start Harry Potter again, use that as a starting block as they are so easy to read and swept up in.

That's a great idea. I picked up HP too a few months after my T went crazy. Bad idea then because it broke me that I wasn't being sucked into HP (a series I've reread 30ish times). Though now I think it might go better.

The memory issues and recall have been driving me crazy. I had a still trap for a mind! I could recall any info from how long ago and retain anything. Now I write everything down, but than I forget that I wrote it done. I was building a stair gate/blocker (new kitten) and I missed one of the most simple measurements that would have saved me hours of errors until I finally noticed what I did.

Sometimes I think this is what ADD feels like.

I’ve reread them a lot as well. Hopefully if you pick them up again the magic will suck you back in (that’s what I’m hoping anyway) I’ll keep trying till I get there.

I've also been having difficulty concentrating on books lately, though mostly due to anxiety, not T. It just took me two weeks to read a book that I would normally devour over a long weekend. Reading like this does indeed diminish the enjoyment, but I'm not giving up! I'm now trying to decide what my next book will be.

I missed reading a lot too. But I found rereading a book (such as HP) reduces my frustration. I already know the story so I’m not really missing anything. The way I look at it is that it’ll take some practice and time to really get into a book with tinnitus. But doing the things we used to and love will help us habituate. If I can take time and energy to read the forum I can certainly try to read a book.

Re-re-reading HP, I’ve noticed I can read for a little while longer than I could but........ still a huge effort on my part and seems to be taking the fun outa it. I suppose that’s something in terms of progress that I can keep my concentration a lil but longer. :bookworm::banghead:

It's the totally melting into the book and losing myself for hours or days I miss. I can't even describe what it use to feel like to vanish into a book.

It does take the enjoyment out of it, but I know it gets a bit easier with practice.

I felt proud I just finished a book! Started it on Sunday and finished it today! It's a miracle and I'll take it. Normally I would have ate that in one day, but it's okay! I'm just happy I had some enjoyment in it and actually wanted to read it.
