If found this article, not sure it has been posted before. There is a short paragraph about nac that I found not very promising....

'N-acetylcysteine (NAC) was tested in two clinical trials with the US military but significant otoprotection from NIHL was not obtained in these clinical trials.

Previous animal studies with NAC showed conflicting results ranging from otoprotection, otoprotection only with concomitant high dose salicylate, to no protection, to exacerbation of NIHL with high levels of NAC so the lack of clinical efficacy may not have been surprising.'

    2. When can we get D -Methionine ?
      I wouldn't trust only NAC.
I know that also Vitamin A,C,E + Folic Acid & Magnesium, Fish Oil can protect your ears.
But what else can we do until the D -Methionine will be out to the open?

@JohnG I know this post is old. However I would like to know how much time did you have H before taking NAC?
Would be interesting to learn about it. Cause if it helps you, would be amazng to try as I have H, and would like to get rid of it so I will properly maange my T. Hope you'll read my post!

      Thank you, Sara

I've been taking NAC religiously along with other supplements and it's done basically nothing for me.

I hope too:). Even my T is moderate, at first I wanted T to go and was able to "cope" with H. But I see that sometimes it's just unbearable as it sets you apart from the world. I never would be able to say that 5 months prior, but my wish would be to heal H, to be able to manage T...

Sara, no harm in trying. Definitely give N-acetylcistiene a try and see how it works out for you.

My h also becomes very mild. But if you quit taking NAC it all comes back. I take the one on the picture but its very expensive. 35 euro for 60 pills. Do you think the Cheaper NAC Works less?

I take between 1 - 2grams a day (2 grams every day upsets my stomach) and haven't noticed much difference, if any. But I've only been taking a couple of weeks. Think I will give it 2 months.

Eh, some people said it does. Some people said it doesn't. Doesn't hurt to try it. I heard it reduces your risk of hearing damage, not actually reduced your T.

I've been taking NAC for several years, I take the NOW brand as it has selenium and molybdenum which enhances absorption. I've never noticed it have an effect on my T, I take it because it's the precursor to glutathione, the master antioxidant, and as noted by someone on the first or second page it's part of my "doing what I can to prevent cancer" protocol.

Two side effects I wasn't expecting but continue to enjoy: 1) NAC helps to thin mucus and I have gone from always having a puffer on me (diagnosed with asthma in 1988) to now not caring whether or not I have one and have maybe used a puffer 10 times in the past three years. 2) I had chronic sinusitis and the NAC has resulted in the frequency being reduced by over 50%. I used to get it every 2 months, now maybe once or twice a year.

NAC detoxifies the body of Hg, so I would imagine it's not only safe, but smart.

Hello everyone! I'm currently abroad on a student exchange, and the only thing that the pharmacies here has to offer is "Fluimucil" with Acetylcysteine... But that's not NAC right?

You are actually supposed to take it on an empty stomach with fruit juice. It is supposed to work better that way. :)

      Thanks, @JasonP!

That does make sense. Are you going to try it, or have you been taking it?

I think I might try it again. Weirdly enough, when I took it for some time I was taking with other stuff and I had the lowest tinnitus in years for about 2 days yet still taking it, it went back up. Maybe it was something else I was taking that caused the drop. That must have been over 7 months ago. I wish I could have figured it out.

I know what you mean! I was taking it with several other supplements, too, and am not sure whether or not it helped. I've stopped taking it for now, and will try it again later.

Can you use NAC when I'm on prednison? Could it give any harm?

Okay here is something interesting. It says to take on an empty stomach with fruit juice. Here is a question though. Is it not true that supplements and vitamins are absorbed in the small intestine or am I wrong? Secondly, I heard it takes 6-8 hours to digest a meal mean it goes from the stomach and small intestine to large intestine. Therefore, should we take it first thing in the morning or right before bed (assuming we haven't had something to eat (at least not eating protein) for 6 or so hours? Would NAC then be absorbed better while we sleep or when we get up and take a supplement and wait a bit before eating? What do you guys think?

It sounds like it might be a good idea to take it just before bedtime.

      What does everyone else think?

Karen, I'm not sure but NAC seemed to INCREASE my tinnitus when I took it. It seems to have some effect on glutamate. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I had a very loud tone in my left ear a couple of days ago.
