If your dad has the same thing going on like Morten Harket, I'd think that you might be in luck as well ;) Who wouldn't run a marathon when they reach a ripe old age, to name an example.

That's a really good description of the band. When a music group calls itself ''greatest band in the world'', you already know how seriously they take themselves :D

I completely agree. There are not a lot of artists who successfully make a cross-over between soul, funk, jazz, synth-pop and classic rock. Only a virtuoso can pull that off. And not to mention the many artists who covered his songs, such as Sinead O'Connor with Nothing Compares To You and Chaka Khan's I Feel For You. That alone shows how great of a songwriter he was.

Ok, I understand what you're going through. It's probably better this way. Many artists who decide to continue with their career despite tinnitus would sooner or later experience more hearing problems and worsening. Noel Gallagher is one of the guys who has experienced a worsening in his tinnitus and hearing and has felt very sorry that he didn't try hard to play safe. I'd imagine nobody wants to be in the same position like he is.

Yes, I have two simple options.

First one is to quit and, hopefully, recover within 5 years or so. Doctor told me that I have a really good chance to recover (she promised me 99%) because I haven't killed my auditory hair cells, I shocked them pretty well and for them to calm down and return to normal work I have to wait who knows how long.

And there's this second option. To go back to singing in a band, play lots of gigs for couple of years and then, who knows, maybe again encounter with this sort of trauma but with a negative result (going deaf) because all the damage is cumulative.

I've chosen to listen to my doctor and to quit because I simply don't want to go deaf at a young age and I want to give my ears a chance.

I'd say it's time to grow up and quit doing stupid decisions.

Have you ever heard of Marc Maron? He's a great comedian who made a really good comment on the Avant-garde Rock of Captain Beefheart. I think you'll love this ;)

Yepp. I also wanna say never listen to TOOL while trying to fall asleep. It's a trap. The moment you'll be almost asleep the intense part of the song will kick in and you'll fall off your bed.

Oops, I'm sorry. I also like the song BTW. It's has a nice 90's vibe to it.

Is it just me who's reminded of Tomi Petteri Putaansuu, at least as far as their voices are concerned?

I love Gogol Bordello, mostly their early work, but still - what a great band indeed.

What I love about their music is that it has some kind of an up beat (I'm not sure if this is the right word for it) to it. Quite a couple of Green Day songs are like that, too. They never fail to make me smile.

As for Gogol Bordello, I also prefer their earlier work. My favourite album has always been Super Taranta.

Definitely something to go with the glass of red wine I'd very much like to have right now if it didn't make my tinnitus super reactive and send my hyperacusis into overdrive.

I wish I could listen to all the stuff you post!

Discovering new (old) music used to be such a delight for me.

The Coffinshakers is a great band from my part of the country. It's some kind of horror-themed Country music.

The most obvious influence is Johnny Cash I would say.

I think they are really good songwriters.

It was also one of the last bands I went to see live. Good memories...

O dear lord, the A'dam Klezmer band. My uncle actually helped promote the band by giving them their very first venue and gig at his own cafe in Amsterdam (Café De Nieuwe Lelie). The band actually became regulars at his cafe for many years. They even played a tribute concert at my uncle's old cafe after his funeral and it really showed how compassionate these musicians are. Anyhow, here's a video of the band and of their fond memories of the cafe.
